Hi Y'all! I hope you can ID this plant that is quickly spreading in grass!

Last year I thought I had plant that grew tall and attracted butterflies!
So I thought I would let it grow!
I have no idea if this is same plant.

I tried to get rid of poison ivy in some areas. This doesn't look like the poison ivy. It's not leaves of 3!

I appreciate any ideas on what it is and if I should get rid of it!

Thanks!

Hi Houall!
Maybe a bone set. Or snakeroot.. both could get tall and have small white flowers.
Plant it and they will come.

When you crush a leaf, does it smell minty? Is the stalk round or square? In the right conditions some mints can get very large and, yes, grow like a weed!

Sally, you may be right about this plant being snake root. I need to read the description again and watch for flowers.

I did want it to grow for the butterflies. Though I don't know if I want it in the yard by the back door if it can be toxic.

Zoe, I don't detect a minty fragrance. I think the stems are round and slightly red.

I'm not sure if I know the difference between round and square stems!

Now I need to decide what to do with the plant!

Sally, I wish I could replant it on a vacant lot!

The sun is shining today. So I took a couple more pictures.

One shows the plant with the multiple plants growing behind it.

Another picture shows the plant with leaves and roots.

Thanks for your help! Thumbs up

It's only "toxic" if you eat it. Frankly, the leaves of the vast majority of plants could be considered to be toxic if eaten.

Hiyall, I think you've determined it's not mint, but for future reference, plants in the Lamiaceae family have square stems, and it's a helpful marker for identifying plants. You can feel and see the difference between a round and square stem. If you snip a stem and look straight at the cut end, that's the perspective I mean.

If you grow coleus, lavender, basil, rosemary, sage check them, all square. Many of them are closely mint-related, catnip, peppermint, spearmint, monarda, lemon balm. And especially if you have any Lamb's ears... it's really obvious on those. Thumbs up

Hi Y'all!, Zoe thanks for info about square stem plants.
I will pay more attention!

Danita, thanks for the info!
In the data base, it looks like mist flowers and snake root may be related! I will watch for flowers!

Livy, thanks for making me feel better, I think! I don't plan to eat it.
Yet it is interesting how people got the toxicity from cow's milk.

Thanks to all for all the info 👍!

Did it bloom last year?

Mistflower, another good suggestion. I think we're in the neighborhood on this, something that probably blooms many tiny flowers and pollinators may like very much.
Plant it and they will come.

Yes, it bloomed last year. That's probably why I have an overabundance of plants this year!
I think it was white flowers that lasted through the hot summer!
I will pay attention again this summer!
Yes, the butterflies loved em!
