I have some morning glory seedlings growing by a pillar, and I thought maybe next year I'll plant Ipomoea indica there, as it looks like a classic morning glory but it might perennialize in my zone if I mulch it well.

But I also intend to plant a climbing rose on the other side of that pillar. The roots would be a few feet from the morning glory roots, but would one smother the other on the pillar? Do you think those two could coexist?

Some morning glories can be very aggressive and might be a threat to a rose, especially a young one.

I love the blue of morning glories but will never plant one again, I've been pulling seedlings for years!

Maybe I should plant the rose first, and then once the rose is mature, plant the morning glory and keep it pruned so it doesn't choke the rose.

Or maybe I should just plant the morning glory somewhere else.

I'd go with plan B.

I've been planning to plant morning glories and/or moonflowers with some of my roses. Would the same advice about morning glories also apply to moonflowers some of you think?

C’est la vie .........
Have any of you tried thunbergia? Black eyed Susan vines? I wonder how those would do with roses?
After all, tomorrow is another day!

I'm not really a rose grower, so I can't comment on roses specifically. However, I do know that removing dead annual vines (or perennial vines that die back to the ground in winter) that are intertwined with perennial vines is a real pain. You have to be really careful not to damage the perennial vine and you often end up with bits of dead annual vine hanging off the perennial vine.
