I have noticed that as KSS sold out and closed last year that some people are getting plants that are not true to name. I too bought what I thought was Silver Dawn, with the tag attached.

Thumb of 2021-05-03/graycrna4u/3ee63d

Imagine my surprise this spring when the plant grew and put up 2 buds. One was a bud bust, but the second gave me a beautiful bloom. Silver Dawn should be a single and can be either pink, yellow, or white. Great plant.
This is what I got. The bud was yellowish before it opened.

What do all the wise ones more experienced than me about what it might be? My suspicion is either Vanilla Schnapps or Pastelegance. Anyone who grows these two help me out here. And those worried about a mislabel remember it could possibly be to your benefit.

What a great mix up! Gorgeous! It looks like Blonde Vision but yours seems to have stronger stem/neck than what my BV produces. Foliage looks a bit different from BV too. So I don't think it is BV but flower looks similar to it. I don't think it is Pastelegance. Pastel has a peachy champagne color.

Here is Blonde Vision

I don't have that many bloom pics of Vanilla Schnapps to compare if yours is VS.

Looks good anyway! It is like winning a lottery, but certainly they could have done a better job in their last year, especially if you were aiming for that particular cultivar.

I think it maybe Summer Glow. Check out Adelman's pic of SG.

Well Gary, I bought two of their Silver Dawn mix. One has a bud, but I don't know if it will open.

I will look at the foliage to compare to yours. To me, yours looks more like Pastelegance, except for the foliage and that it looks short.

This thread is going to be interesting!!

I do not think it is Summer Glow, which generally looks like Lactiflora.

The game is afoot!

What a lovely flower and a nice surprise. Well, I guess that depends on your perspective but it's a trade I wouldn't be upset about.

It doesn't appear to be Vanilla Schnapps. I mean, I don't grow it, but based on every photo I've seen a defining characteristic of the flowers is an irregular, notched petal margin.

Here are some photos of Pastelegance foliage at different stages of growth if you want to compare. It doesn't really look like a match to me.

I hope for a similar mixed up, what a gorgeous color. I did buy a lot from SS, only a few came up.

Thanks for the input. I guess it is possible it could be Blonde Vision also. I don't know if I have ever had a first spring bare root put up such a perfectly double bloom. And I think I have read BV can be a very finicky grower.

Considering all the amazing peonies Klehm hybridized, and the trouble they had trying to find someone to continue the farm during Covid I think a few mistakes are just not worth complaining about. Enjoy all the peonies they created that you enjoy year upon year in your gardens and not cast dispersion on faults during a crazy pandemic year of closing. I adore my Klehm peonies. And am pleased to have several to enjoy for years to come.

Let's not mix great plantsman famous for hybridizing or promoting of new plants and business entity responsible for completing customer's order on time and in correct manner.

And all people on this forum at one point were given the wrong one (from different suppliers) which does not diminish their unhappiness realizing this mistake a few years later.

I can say all of my SS came up. About 50%-70% have buds, but nothing has opened.

I agree with Alex, sometimes it is a happy accident to get the wrong plant and sometimes it is just disappointing even if people were doing their best during a pandemic. Having lived thru Hurricane Katrina...mistakes weren't any nicer then, just more forgivable and still took time to get over.

That's very good Annie, about less than 5% of mine have buds.

I don't mind getting mixed up with the common peonies. I do mind getting mixed up with the more rare ones or the expensive tree peonies. Imagine paying and hoping for a Joanna Gilbert and getting a Hanakisoi. I hope this does not happen to me. Nothing is wrong with Hanakisoi but Joanna Gilbert was what I paid for and wanted.

I agree with Karen… it is a commercial transaction. Money was paid for a certain item, not a grab bag item.

Two more of my 2020 SS purchases are true to name.

I am glad to see your post, LG! Maybe the mistakes are just an isolated few. I have two buds on my Commando and they appear red which is a good. I also got a bud on my Chocolate Chip. Hopefully, this will be true to name since this is rarely offered elsewhere.

I would take that mistake, Gary, in a heartbeat. Depending on where that was located, an option may also be a seedling. Klehm did a ton of peony breeding too. It would be interesting to have known where this was dug and what it was near.

I 100% think that they really tried to run a great operation until their last day, with true to name cultivars. Toward the end, with the loss of José, their main plantsman, I could see where things could have gotten confused. But I also know things were well marked.

I don't think it looks like Vanilla Scnapps or Pastelegence. It will be nice to watch this one develop over time in your garden though. I like it. It's a nice full flower.

So, the peony I ordered from Khlem's was Silver Dawn, but when it bloomed I got this

Thumb of 2022-05-13/graycrna4u/543be3

Thumb of 2022-05-13/graycrna4u/ccd98c

If you look closely at the second pic you can see 3 buds. The third bud opened up this week and

Thumb of 2022-05-13/graycrna4u/4de51b

If you look closely, the third bloom is light pink and is indeed a bloom from Silver Dawn. I think I got 2 types of roots. The one I ordered, and the beautiful mistake.
