Sorry folks. Not quite sure how to do this, but it's mostly to Beckygardener. In another post about nematodes, I mentioned that my seedlings are doing as good as the regular commercial daylilies, so why not just grow my own and as they die off in Florida, at least I will have a new blooming crop each year :-). Maybe mine are not as good as the current commercial "pretty face" look, but they are good enough to provide a colorful garden for me. Here is one that just bloomed THIS MORNING. It did not bloom last year, its first year, but has 4 stalks this year full of buds. It's good enough for me. All but 2 blooming daylilies at this moment are mine. Becky, Incidentally, when I mentioned damp off, I don't get it in my germination trays because I use 100% fresh perlite. When I moved the very young seedlings to the bed I got hit. This time I will just move them to sterile dirt trays until Nov, then into the beds. Bob

Nice photo. Seedlings also have the element of surprise involved. Like being pregnant and not knowing if it will be a boy or girl, but being excited either way. That said sometimes you get "a face only a mother can love".
As various threads have pointed out named cultivars can sometimes be the opposite - expecting the pretty face from the photo but then disappointed when it does not look as nice as the advert.
So, your post has plenty of merit. And seeds are cheap (sometimes free, if your own). Win-win.

You are right on. I kept looking at this one's buds and wondering what color. It is a cross between Korean Mother of Purple and Red Volunteer ( a dormant). Nothing that was planned. This looks similar to Red Volunteer, only it is truly an evergreen and more vigorous. I have about 5 more plants from that seed pod, but only single stalk plants versus this one with multiple stalks. No flowers on those open yet. It will be interesting to see the variation in color from this seed pod. I truly believe this plant is being influenced by the genes from the Korean Fulva, two generations up.

Didn't think it would open today thought it would be a couple more days. I only say all this because you are right about the surprises. Smiling That's the fun part.

I don't want anyone to think I just planted a few seeds and now I have plenty of blooming daylilies. I started with over 325 seedlings and kept losing them or pitching rusty ones until I got down to good ones. Maybe 5% fit my "garden" standard. Maybe 1% would fit the "register me" standard.
