As various threads have pointed out named cultivars can sometimes be the opposite - expecting the pretty face from the photo but then disappointed when it does not look as nice as the advert.
So, your post has plenty of merit. And seeds are cheap (sometimes free, if your own). Win-win.


You are right on. I kept looking at this one's buds and wondering what color. It is a cross between Korean Mother of Purple and Red Volunteer ( a dormant). Nothing that was planned. This looks similar to Red Volunteer, only it is truly an evergreen and more vigorous. I have about 5 more plants from that seed pod, but only single stalk plants versus this one with multiple stalks. No flowers on those open yet. It will be interesting to see the variation in color from this seed pod. I truly believe this plant is being influenced by the genes from the Korean Fulva, two generations up.

Didn't think it would open today thought it would be a couple more days. I only say all this because you are right about the surprises. Smiling That's the fun part.
