I grew several of Dave Talbott's daylilies back around the time I first joined AHS. Back in those days, most daylily hybridizers had paper catalogs and if you joined AHS, you'd get a lot of paper catalogs. Dave was in FL ( northern part of the state, I believe) and he specialized in big flat faced blooms. Not knowing any better and growing my garden in those days, I ordered many award winners, going by AHS 's AM and HM winners lists. He sent me some of his registrations as bonuses and I ordered several too. Many of his used the prefix Caribbean. Caribbean Golden Galleon was a favorite, along with Caribbean Whipped Cream. Eventually, the very short scapes and disproportionately large blooms bothered me to the point that I got rid of it. No one who sees my garden now would believe that back in those early days, the garden consisted mostly of huge flat faced "bagel" daylilies.

I grew this one, twice. Beautiful flower, but very short. I had it one season, it bloomed and died. I loved the flower and got it again, hoping the scapes were short because it was nor mature. The next one was short, but it died again. I know others who grow it and does well in my zone, but I did not try it again.

My experience with it has been largely good. Yes, it has a short scape, but the flower is good enough to pair up with other plants with much higher scapes. I noticed that the flowers tend to open poorly in very humid weather. There are fewer flowers than I might like. But for all that, it holds up very well to Wisconsin weather, and that's why I keep it.
