I have a plant that came with some tradescantia cuttings in moist moss about 4 years ago. The cutting had roots so I potted it also. It is a dark purple or maroon like color leaf plant that starts out with new green eye shaped leaves with purple veins. I do know that it is not a smoke bush, the color is close because I have one by my front door. The mystery plant has become woody and and I have been rooting new growth that has soft stems. I have 2 small pots of them with more to root, they root very quickly (1week) if stems are soft. It grows fast but I can't figure out what it is. It was only one little stem when I received it and it grew very well. I keep it on Deck in summer/fall. I would love to know what it is. It's never had any blooms on it. I don't do outside gardening any longer because my husband had to help me and he passed a couple years ago. House plants have always been a hobby. Can anyone offer any help in identifying this interesting plant? The first picture is one I potted a week and a half ago. It has grown 50% in that time. It is an amazing plant and believe it's a plant that thrives near water because I water it constantly. Thank you!

It looks like a Cordyline, or Ti plant. The description fits yours. The pictures aren't coming down for me, because a storm is interfering my reception, but you can compare for yourself.

I don't think this is a cordyline. The leaves on cordylines are much longer and the mystery plant are dicot-veined and cordylines is a monocot. I myself don't know what this plant is but it is definitely not a cordyline.

I agree with G2493, not a cordyline.

Oh well, I took my best shot. Anyway, it's a handsome plant, but sounds as if it could overpopulate the house pretty fast.

Aren't those all tropical plants?

Yes, they are commonly grown tropical perennials that are used as both houseplants and as summer bedding/container plants where not hardy.

I just saw a hydroponics video and this guy had a lot of these planted in his system, he said if planted in the ground you have to water it often or put it on an irrigation system. It has to be what I have. I couldn't catch what he called it. He talked about amaranth but I looked them up but didn't look like this. I wrote and asked him. He grows food and microgreens so if it's a greens plant, well it's not green, I don't know. Hopes he answers. Thanks for the help.

This plant is in the amaranth family - that's what he was probably talking about.
