Would like to find wind chimes that will actually "ring" in a breeze. Seems as though any local garden centers have them as seasonal items. Wanting to give them as gifts..and for myself, too !! Any catalogs to look into ??

If you want beautiful sound, get Corinthian Bells. I have a set of the 72 inch hanging in my pergola. I got them at a huge garden center in Kansas City, Heartland Garden Center. A bit of a commute from Wyoming. We were in KC for the NASCAR race. I go to the race with him, he has to take me to Heartland. Whistling

Go here, you can listen to each one. I see that there is not a 72 inch listed, mine must be the 78 inch, but I didn't pay quite that much for them, maybe $100 or so less.

My favorite windchimes are made by Grace Notes in Mariposa, CA. I see they are closed because of supply issues but this company is selling them. I have a small tinkly one and a large one that sounds like church bells. Lovey dubby

I have a lovely wind chime from this company. Sadly, they apparently no longer carry the one I have, but you can listen to their selections on their website here: http://www.jwstannard.com/

One of my neighbors (luckily two houses down and across the street) hates windchimes and even writes rude letters to her neighbors who have the audacity to allow any to chime across her property lines. Hilarious!

My Corinthian Bells are tuned to the key of B. I want a smaller set to hang at our place in Texas. These are so relaxing, if it is really windy, they still don't clang noisily.

Hi & welcome! High-quality wind chimes will be musically correct, as previous comments have mentioned. They should match the notes on a piano or other musical instrument, and the tones should be in harmony with each other. They are expensive. I have one that I was able to keep after working in sales for a company that makes them. If I'd paid retail for it, it would have been about $250 almost 20 yrs ago. I keep it inside except for special occasion days when I take it outside because I don't want it to degrade in the weather and I can't sleep if a breeze makes them ring.

I also LOVE bamboo chimes, which make such a pleasantly tropical, beachy sound. I'd love to have some bamboo that I could use to make one, or more, but none of the bamboo I could get to is fat enough for the deeper sound I like.

For any hollow-tube-type wind chime, the longer the tubes, the deeper the sound will be. In addition to garden centers, gift shops and religious stores are other places to look, and sometimes big truck stops will have a rack of these. I now live in a rural area and understand the necessity of buying things online, but if you have a chance to shop somewhere in person, that's be the best way to know that you love the sound of a particular one.

I agree with listening to them first if you can. My local feed store has the Corinthians, and I want one of those. Not cheap, but they have beautiful tones.

I can vouch for the Corinthian Bells. I have a set that some friends gave us seven years ago, and they do SING. Everybody tells me they are the most beautiful chimes they have ever heard.
Maybe it takes a long time to grow, but remember that if nobody plants it, nobody has it.

They sure are, but I do have to admit that the small ones are kinda "clang-y". I prefer the deeper, more majestic tone of the big chimes.

My sweety made me a giant one out of aluminum fence rails, tuned it to the key of C to match my other smaller-big ones, which came from somewhere long ago--Woodstock, is my guess.
It's awesome and one of the best birthday presents ever!

Be sure to check out Music of the Spheres chimes. Personally, I think they're the best. They've been called "the Stradivarius of wind chimes". You can listen to them here. I like Pentatonix best: https://www.musicofspheres.com...

Here is another suggestion.

https://windriverchimes.com/pa...

I have had mine for about30 years and it never fails to please. Due to wear and tear, the lines holding the tubes have broken twice but my husband easily repaired them. I love the sound when I'm in bed at night and its a little stormy outside. Very soothing.

I agree with others though. Find retail places where you can listen to them. The smaller they are the higher the tone. The larger the lower the tone.

It's all about each person's preference.

I like the "basso profundo", but not to where I'm going to shell out $3800 for a set. LOL My Corinthian Bells sound lovely, and are low tones. The higher tones grate on my eardrums. Rolling on the floor laughing Whistling
