...a seller on ETSY is using one of my photos to sell their plants. Without my permission. How do I get that taken down?

You could write the seller and tell them to take it down. If they don't you can contact Etsy, and I'd hope they would take it down and give them a reprimand.

I contacted the seller and she agreed to remove it. Stuff like that makes me mad. People think they can just lift things off the internet and its free

Glade you could resolve the issue , but you should not have had to deal with it.

A lot of people on pages I am on will post other people's photos of a plant from the net if they do not have one of their own, but most will say something like...this is not my own photo its just for an example, or this photo was found originally HERE and the photographer is 'xyz' and they are not using other people's photos to sell stuff. Its my suspicion that this person, who lives in the UK, was selling seeds (the seeds were from a tropical aroid, Remustaria vivipara) that she imported strictly for the purpose of selling (and did not grow her own plants and collect her own seed) so therefore had no photos of her own. So she decided to nip one, and chose mine

I have had several of my photos used like that on various sites, one rose photo in particular I have to do a periodic search for. Even foreign sites have used it and so far they have all removed it after I contacted them.

Is there an expeditious way to look vs going through every site? Thanks

I was actually looking for the plant in my photo. I had it some years ago but lost it. Its not very common to find it for sale, even though it can literally grow like a weed in the right conditions. In 2018 my daughter and I went out to the local botanical gardens here where it does grow like a weed and I took the photo.

I was googling the plant, and pressed the 'shopping' button on Google. And guess what popped up? My photo, on this ad for ETSY where the seeds were for sale. So I went there and found it.

On my laptop in Google Chrome browser I right click the image thumbnail in the database and chose "Search image with Google Lens'. Other browsers would probably have something similar. Not sure how IPad and IPhone do that function or if it's even an option.

in my experience with Etsy, you have to be careful. there are some excellent and extremely talented people there but also some very nefarious and shifty ones. I would not but any plant material from them. I ordered seeds a month ago and what I got looks like a small bag of miniscule dust particles. This was my fault as I should have researched what I was ordering more that I did. however I have ordered from Etsy with great results.[SeaMosaics]

My Hoya carnosa photo has been used at the world of succulents website (without my permission) for quite a few years now even though I contacted them a long time ago and asked them to either remove it, or credit me as the photo owner. https://worldofsucculents.com/... I just noticed two of my photos of Hoya heuschkeliana at their website also, one from DG and the other from garden.org. At least they are now showing where they took the images from and someone can click the link to get to the original database pictures.

At least they did that! I have had some where they cropped out my personal name off the photo (I used to embed it a long time ago) and one I found where they flipped it, trying to make it look different.

And I just checked for my popular rose image, Easy Does It, and found it on a Ukraine rose site. They cropped out my name. I emailed them.

I don't buy plants online anymore. I also stopped shipping plants. There are too many scammers out there who either scam you when you buy or try and scam you when you sell.

This photo use/theft is really crappy. Especially when someone uses them to imply they have the plant and are really just repackaging seeds to sell, or selling a different specimen. I would never buy a plant online these days.

Yes that is a big part of it. Instead of taking the time to actually take photos of 'THE' plant that is being offered for sale, they use a single photo for all, sometimes purloined, which really does constitute fraud in some cases. This is not allowed on the Facebook selling/trading groups I belong to. You have to take your own photo of the plant you are offering. Period. But all these other sale sites, especially the online 'nurseries' which really may just be an extra bedroom in someone's house set up with grow lights and a humidifier, will commonly misrepresent

Not necessarily. The last few times I've bothered to click on a plant in DG database, the quality of the pics is so degraded, and they're resized to such a small size, they're basically worthless. I don't think anyone is seeing pics on that site in their original condition as they were originally uploaded.

That used to be my go-to for zone info but I just don't bother clicking in there anymore for anything. That site is dead to me. I used to take different versions of the same pic to upload to several different places so it wasn't just the same thing in another location. I contributed a lot of pics to what I thought was a free site for the good of the public and I don't mind saying, I still feel a little butthurt about what happened and how they are now, essentially, making money off of what I intended as a donation to public domain. I wouldn't want that on my karma balance sheet. I wish them the best with that!
