While wandering through my garden yesterday, I found a bearded iris blooming that stood only 6-inches tall! The blossom is large palm size. I almost missed it because it was blooming along side some grape hyacinths, which were nearly the same color. After a bit of research, I "discovered" that there is such a thing as a miniature dwarf bearded iris. Is that what this is? It has bloomed really early, with only 2 other iris in my garden just showing a stalk with bud. I bought this iris as part of "Reblooming German Iris Mix" that in theory is supposed to get 3" tall. I'm confused. Any insight is appreciated.

I agree

It's also more likely to happen the first bloom after planting.

Agree with others. I actually have one trying to bloom right now with No bloom stock. I have very rarely seen this on TB's but obviously it happens

My Dogs were obsessed with doing there business in this spot before it was annexed as an Iris garden. Needless to say, I caught them in this particular garden many a time this Fall and Winter. I wonder if it's possibly related to structural damage induced by Paws.

miniature dwarfs have small flowers. Agree probably a TB with troublesome growth this yr. Later stems will probably be taller.

The second and third blooms on this iris opened today, so I took more careful photos along with measurements. The tallest fan is less than 11 inches (the taller fans go to other iris plants). The flower itself is about 2.5 inches wide, by 2 inches tall, and stands about 6 inches tall. I'll be curious to see how this plant does in the future.

Did you have a cold snap, followed by warmer weather? I had a very late "tail end" 'Persian Berry' bloom do that to me last year. All the others were nice and tall, with prolific blooms, but the last straggler bloom appeared just like that, from the foliage base. We had a very rapid shift to our summer heat right before it showed up. Wonky weather can sometimes cause short-stemmed TB's. I've had it happen in my garden occasionally. As others have said, weather can affect the stalk height. Also, how's the watering? Have you been short on rain or a little lax on watering? Life happens, and weather happens... but sometimes if the water is in short supply, they can have short stalks like that. Also, new transplants can sometimes throw short stalks like that. I think the common denominator is some sort of environmental stress. It's probably not permanent, and subsequent stalks and/or seasons should be better for you, Good show of the Persian Berry, with spiderwort and 'Pierre Menard' antiques.

Great photo Michelle! Lovey dubby

Lori, I agree with the others that the blooms and foliage look much too large for it to be a little one. I have had TBs do the same thing, often in their first year in my garden.
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

The foliage on a mini is in proportion to the flower. Yours are definiately a taller plant blooming short. See dwarf iris society. I can't seem to open my photo file.
