BigBill said: Well that is not the case here. Potinara, the ending "ara" signifies 4 different genera are involved in the hybrid. Cattleya, Rhyncholaelia, Sophronitis and Guarianthae.
Sophronitis came into play because the species coccinea is in the background! But those DNA freaks decided that Sophronitis coccinea is correctly Cattleya coccinea! BUT since the 'ara' means 4 genera, it no longer has 4 genera.
I believe the proper genus now is Rhyncattleanthe. But I am going to check.
Yes that's right. But now there is only three genera involved Cattleya, Guarianthae and Rhyncholaelia. So no more Potinara.
Guarianthae is a newer genus now for Central American Cattleyas like Cattleya aurantiaca, now Guarianthae aurantiaca. Now to really confuse you the Brassavola that was used in Potinara is now a newer genus Rhyncholaelia.
My head hurts now! I am so confused that I am no where sure that what I said is true.
Oh Jack, Jack Daniels. Come over here!!! Tennessee Whisky, sing it Chris!!
Most times our judging software makes those distinctions but it still is hard to keep track of!
I often wish that we could unwind all of this nonsense and go back 20 years.
