~ Editing my original post to say that the plant in question is Trailing Jade (Kleinia petraea)

I was going to add some photo's to the database and suddenly can't for the life of me remember the name of this plant! Crassula? Kalanchoe? or what? I've owned this plant in the past but this hanging basket is a fairly new acquisition from @ two months ago. It had a label when I purchased it but now the label has gone missing. I'm sure I have older photo's on my laptop but *Blush* I seem to sometimes "misplace" picture folders and they end up mixed in with other folders and I think that's why I'm not finding my photo's of this one. So, Green Grin! to keep me from getting an even worse headache ... please, can someone tell me who this is? I'd be ever so grateful.

Janet, I think it is a Crassula. Stems are a little different from my C. ovata but I kind of remember the name Crassula arborescens so maybe it's that one? I'm going to put the photo's in a folder on my laptop and name it Crassula until I can figure out for sure which one it might be.

As always, thanks for your help!

I found C. arborescens in the database: Silver Jade (Crassula arborescens) but I'm still not sure ... I have so much trouble comparing photo's!

C. arborescens was the one I was thinking of Lin, but some others are very similar. If you have both, and this looks different to your C. ovata, the decision is entirely yours. Hilarious!

Thanks Janet ... yes, this one has a different look as well as growth habit than my C. ovata. I think I might make a trip to the local nursery where I bought it and see if they have any left so I can check their labels. C. arborescens sounds so familiar and I'm thinking that's what the label said but I look at so many different plants on line and at garden centers/nurseries .... Whistling

You might want to compare it to Senecio, like jacobsenii (trailing jade.)

Thanks you two, that's definitely my plant! I was thinking Crassula or Senecio and my plant is definitely the "Weeping Jade"/"Trailing Jade" although I'm finding conflicting info on the correct scientific name. I'm not real familiar with succulents so hopefully someone more knowledgeable with these types of plants can help me out!

I definitely remember my plant tag reading Senecio jacobaea but upon more research I'm even more confused! This is what I've found:

The ATP database has a photo of what looks identical to my plant listed as Kleinia petraea, and lists Senecio jacobsenii as a synonym. Trailing Jade (Kleinia petraea) And, I wonder if Xeramtheum's photo is in the correct location?

The ITIS website says that Senecio jacobaea is incorrect, not an accepted name and lists the accepted name as Jacobaea vulgaris. But J. vulgaris is Ragwort, a totally different plant from the "Trailing Jade"!

The KEW website has listings for Senecio jacobaea and Kleinia petraea but I have no clue what plants those names go with since no photo's are included!

So .... I'm stumped as to what the correct scientific name is for Trailing/Weeping Jade!! Grumbling I'm getting too old for this!

Senecio jacobsenii (not jacobaea) is an accepted name on the Plant List, and it has one of my long lost relatives named who was obviously one of those plant hunters in days gone by. nodding

This is Jacobaea vulgaris (Senecio jacobaea)

How odd that there is a Senecio which looks like Crassula! Rolling my eyes.

So, how do we know for certain which scientific name is the correct one? The ATP database entry shows it as Kleinia petraea and lists Senecio jacobensii as the synonym:

Trailing Jade (Kleinia petraea)

When I google I find most places show the name as Senecio jacobensii but a few list it as Kleinia with Senecio being the synonym.

I will go ahead and add my photo's to the database at the Kleinia petraea location and hopefully someone will be able to figure it out for sure at some point because it's really confusing to me. Confused Blinking Green Grin!

Don't pull your hair out yet Lin, but the Plant List also gives Kleinia petraea as accepted. Rolling on the floor laughing

It seems we have two different plants in confusion with each other unless the have become one. Senecio jacobsenii isn't given as a synonym, more research is needed.

I know but my flower is different. Janet mine and this flower reminds me of a weed that grows in the grass. Dandelion, don't tell me same family. Mine had me confused with a cactus and I have a nice clump growing in a shady spot. Likes partial shade.

Janet: Yep, I saw that one too ... LOL, I was originally going with Senecio. I did put my photo's in the database at the Kleinia petraea entry. I originally I thought it was a Crassula because I had a plant with a tag C. arborescens at one time too. I'm not going to pull my hair out about it, LOL but I sure would be interested in knowing which name is the right one. For the time being I have it in a folder on my laptop with the label: "Trailing Jade" (K. petraea/S. jacobensii) Green Grin!

OK, made some modifications based upon TICA, Global Compositae Checklist, the reference database for these genus. These are both accepted names.

Now I'm even more confused ... and it doesn't take much to confuse this old gal. Rolling on the floor laughing Are they both accepted names yet two separate genus for the same identical plant?

I uploaded my photo's to the database entry for Kleinia petraea. I hope that's right but if not they can always be moved.

Sorry Lin, When GCC speaks, I listen.

Things actually appear to be getting better with these taxonomic databases. If you look through ITIS, they coordinate Asteraceae with GCC. The Catalog of Life has expanded and references GCC, Kew and a slew of others, as does The Plant List. I always check with the source databases.
