So, I think I'm probably not the only one here who, when browsing new intros from your favorite growers see an iris (or several) that you must have, become enamored of, can't live without - BECOME OBSESSED WITH. Below are three that have had that effect on me. Hope you'll share yours.

Sergey - this was the exact picture that got me

Dark Universe - this was the picture

But the trick is will you still be obsessed with them when the next new batch come along? I often wait a year or so before purchasing and by then only some of the ones I really wanted I really still want! Hilarious! Dark Universe is one of those I still am obsessed with.

Oh yes, my dear. I never can afford to buy them when they come out. I have to wait a couple of years, then plant and wait. Hoping this will be the year Sergey finally blooms for me. Have not seen it yet, ditto Dark Universe. The last one is new, so I have some waiting on my hands.

Here's my heartbreak regarding Festival of Light. I ordered from Thomas this year. He is good enough to let people request what they want for a bonus. So I gave a list of choices, all at least 2 years old. I would never have the gall to request a super expensive new one. What happened? Instead of giving me any that I listed, he gifted me a new intro, but it of course wasn't Festival. Time after time on this forum, I see people get bonuses from growers that are the ones I want, meanwhile, the same grower sends me a different thing - nice of course because all the iris these folks grow are nice - but not one I would have ever bought for myself. If I had acres and acres, who cares. But I don't. It's getting to the point where I have to cull. Two iris in this category for me, both beautiful, but I would have never bought them: Wishes Granted and Rainbow Road.

They'll probably have to go someday much as I hate to send any iris by Keppel away (I have this hero worship for him *Blush* ) and those were ones he sent me himself, so I feel even worse

Lyn: Yep, that photo of Seegey got me too and mine bloomed this Season. It went over and beyond meeting my expectations. The color is beautiful and the form is gorgeous. Way up there in my season highlights. I hope you find it equally wonderful!!!

I had a friend, decades ago, who called this desire "plant lust". I can't say that I disagree.

('Sergey' IS beautiful. Mine didn't bloom this year; I think I need to give it more sun.)
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

I've tried Sergey twice now, and both times it died over the first winter. I guess I have to lust after it from a distance. Sad

Dark Universe is worth the cost to get it. It's amazing. Sticking tongue out

Festival of Lights is nice, but much like Flash of Brilliance which I have and like. It's a good grower.

Most vendors will send you bonus irises that are good growers for them, as they have a lot of them.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Tom, I so appreciate this post. I was wondering how growers decided on what bonuses to send.

Flash of Brilliance looks gorgeous.

I got that bit of info about bonuses from vendors by listening to a speech by Tom Johnson at our Iris club banquet.

Was the speech recorded and posted on line anywhere? If so, I'd love to hear it. It never occurred to me that iris breeders gave speeches. I'm going to have to search...

It wasn't recorded to my knowledge, most of the talk was based on looking at some of the up coming seedlings.

I wouldn't say that I lust after it, but 'Blind Ambition' is intriguing. I'm not sure that I've ever seen an iris image, let alone a TB, with that blue-beard, yellow/white bloom coloration.

No, I think that is one of Keppel's innovations.
