I have NO DL blooms yet in NE Iowa. I don't remember when they appeared in former years but it seems unusually bloomless. Other things in the garden have done wonderfully this year - hostas are huge - weigelas packed with flowers. Am I just forgetting when daylilies start to bloom?

I'm in zone 7, and just had my first flower open today. Do you have scapes yet?

Here in zone 6b, I have been having blooms since June 1, but only 1 scattered here and there til the last 5 or 6 days. I would think this would be very early for you to see blooms

In 6a, only my earliest of earlies opened yesterday. Any others that opened were new to the yard, bred in a greenhouse. Don't expect Daylilies in 4b until the end of June.

It does depend on what you grow. I've had the species Hemerocallis minor in flower since some time in May. There's a yellow daylily in gardens locally that I think is Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus, and it's in flower. 'Flavina' has flowers open, so does a NOID that may be 'Gold Dust'. There are scapes on 'Pawprints on my Heart' (my avatar), 'Siloam June Bug', 'Bee's Bettie Sue', Hollywood Daily' and at least a couple of others that I'd need to check their ID on a map. It's raining out and tons of mosquitoes so I haven't been out to look today.

I am having the same issue. Just scattered blooms here and there but lots of scapes! Usually my earliest cultivars are blooming around mid May 🤷 I'm looking forward to the bloom explosion, though!! nodding nodding

I'm in zone 6b and have had very scattered blooms since the end of May. I have around 240 cultivars with about 20-25 blooming now and tons of scapes, but right now it is a bloom here, a bloom there.

It definitely depends on what cultivars you have.

Still waiting on my first bloom in zone 5b.🌞

Last year it was on 6/19...I *might* get a bloom tomorrow or the following day on a seedling. We shall see🧐...last year's first bloom was on a Happy Returns seedling as well. Definitely a lot of buds and scapes growing! 😊

My conclusion for Extra-Early (EE) daylily blooms can be reduced to two factors .... Assuming BOTH moisture & nutrition are present as normally required. Considering that I live in Ontario 1/2 hour north of Lake Ontario (Rochester New York is directly opposite) probably at the transition of USA Zone 4-5 These are my observations & conclusions to date for 2022 ......

(1) Where your plants are located (Micro-climates) and (2) Specific cultivars you have growing ...

-- (2) point first .... My special interest is with EE Diploids (AHS Database Reveals 835 current such cultivars ... Including Tets we have 1616 EE cultivars to consider & select from ... Out of approx. 96,000 registrations .... Pretty small group to select from. For consistent EE bloom the genes for EE performance MUST be there within the cultivar (Exceptions are VERY occasional 'carry-overs' from late scapes of the previous autumn that have been waiting all winter to show & to bloom.) My earliest blooms this season started about May 24-25th Up to including this morning June 16th) these have - AND continue to produce - EE blooms: 'Joy Of Spring' (Kamensky) + 'Little Red Spring Song' (Rood) + 'Orangeman' (Yeld) + 'Begin With A Bang' (Huben) + Cobb's Hill Joy (Zettek) + Species 'lilia...-flava' + 'midden...' + 'dumort...." + several such NOID clones & F1 & F2 seedlings from species collected over the years. (Also to be considered - BUT not always realistically available - are 'greenhouse forced' EE & E & EM cultivars 'pushed' to be in bloom for public sales during peak purchasing times of May & early June.)

(1) Micro-climates (Location in YOUR gardens) One cannot 'talk about' EE blooms without bringing 'Stella de Oro' (SDO) into the picture. My several SDO clumps here have NOT yet bloomed this season (Estimating at least a week yet?) However, a fellow I gave some divisions to a couple of years ago has had SDO blooms since about May 24-25 this season. SAME genetics. Differences could be moisture & nutrition BUT unlikely. MY conclusion is simply locations - His plants are in a wide-open flat field-like setting with full sunlight exposure ALL DAY. My own are NOT treated so well and have both tree roots & shade to contend with. ... This one comparison has emphasized the importance of location & exposures & micro-climates to me THIS season. .... Same genetics yet about 4 weeks difference in FFO.

Final point to emphasize the need to acquire cultivars with EE genetics if you want blooms to be showing beside your tulips & daffs ... I have several NOT outstanding seedlings 'Out-There' that are consistent EE bloomers ..... 2022 Maiden FFO blooms are just now opening up .... 30-40 interesting developing .... MOST going back to 'Begin With A Bang' .... Interesting times for myself, folks. DO hope my observations & comments are helpful for those seeking REALY early daylily blooms. Such blooms seldom ever show up by chance. Go and find them ... Go and breed them ....
