My fans are very easily breaking off when I'm pulling off the yellow foliage.
This is happening throughout the entire garden.
I've dug many out of the ground, cut off the decaying tubers and spongy base.
I'm hopeful I can save my small garden in comparison.
If anyone has experienced this, please share your diagnosis and cure?
Not only are my daylilies broken, I am heart broken too.
I've attached photo(s).
Thank you in advance.

Respectfully,

Diane

Hello All,
This is the first time I've posted a question and added photos.
Excuse my inexperience.
Here is the last of photos. Even the roots and tubers are decaying or spongy.
Thanks again in advance for any knowledge of what's happening in my garden.
Respectfully,
Diane

can you get some photos of the soil, and the entire plant. Is the soil well draining or heavy?

Also list any products you have been using this year or any changes in your routine in the garden (too much rain, less watering than usual, ect)

Do you have any animals tromping through your garden? I used to get deer and what they did not eat they stomped all over, damaging the joint where the green meets the roots (the crown area) can result in it rotting, so if animals or kids are inadvertently walking on them, landing toys on them ect it can damage them.

Have you noticed any pests around the plants?

Yellow foliage, fans pulling off easily, decaying tubers and spongy base.. sounds like rot to me.

I bought some seedlings and one or two named plants from a fellow hybridizer this spring and much to my dismay, I noticed this sort of thing happening with the seedlings.

They were dug from my beds immediately and I saw a lot of rotting away roots with foliage rotting/breaking away and spongy crowns. I guessed root rot - though I don't really know. My solution was to scrape, pull and wash off anything bad, soak them in hydrogen peroxide mixed with water, let dry off then plant in pots in potting soil. I then soaked the spots they came out of with the peroxide solution and don't plan to put anything else in those spots for a while and will probably pour on some more peroxide when I have time.

Everything else around where they were is fine and they are all growing in raised beds, so it's not heavy or too wet soil .. it's those plants.

I'm keeping an eye on the named one and it's looking a bit suspect so maybe I'll pour peroxide solution on it and the surrounding ground but it's not yet bad as they seedlings were.

Meanwhile, the seedlings have not died but don't look like there's new growth.

Have you added any new soil lately or mulch, maybe something in soil since it is affecting many of the plants at once?

Thank you All for sharing your knowledge.
I've been in the garden all day since 8:00am.
I've removed one third of my plants, washed each one, surgerically removed all decay, soaked and hosed them clean.
Oh and turned the soil about a foot deep!
By no means have I finished cutting and removing the decay, as each one takes time.
My poor plants are traumatized and so am I!
I had aphids last year and this year too. As I did last year, without incident,I sprayed them with dish Liquid and water however, this year I used Platinum Dawn and I sprayed heavily.
I'm guessing this was to strong of dish liquid. Of course I made sure I sprayed directly down every fan. Having explained that, I'd guess you all may agree with me that it was to much and to strong?
Even the few iris I have were effected.
I'm very grateful to each of you who shared your information.
I'll keep you posted as I begin to reestablish my garden.
One last thing...
... I will never know exactly what I'm putting back (names of daylilies) because I hastily removed them.
I may have 4, yes only four I'm able to identify as of today.
Much appreciation and thanks!

Respectfully,

Diane

I would agree. Dawn Dishwashing liquid has often been recommended as a remedy for various plant pests, but Platinum Dawn seems to be a very different product. I found it highly recommended when searching for cleansing/degreasing solution for use in an ultrasonic cleaner, and it works extremely well for that purpose. I didn't like it at all for dishes. It has a chemical odor, and is very difficult to rinse off. I suspect Platinum Dawn is a detergent, not a soap.

For control of insect pests, I would recommend a product specifically designed for that use, such as Safer's Insecticidal Soap. Neem Oil works well too.

@DianeSawyer My sympathies to you and your garden! Group hug

I agree with comments already made, so just wanted to send some moral support your way. As for not being able to ID your daylilies, hopefully you have tags or have a list of those which you've planted...? If so, if/when they recover and do bloom, you should be able to match them to their names and retag them. Crossing Fingers!
Life is what happens while you are making other plans.

I would second that, Safers is formulated specifically for plants, "regular" dishwashing liquids are all detergents as far as I know. Platinum Dawn does have some things in it that the ordinary Ultra Dawn does not, and it's supposedly much stronger concentration? Here are the ingredients I found listed:
