I've ordered plants from Schreiner's and Maryott's for years and never received plants that look like this, but I think they will be okay. I soaked them overnight with a bit of Super Thrive and potted up yesterday.

These look pretty sad. I have stopped buying from Schreiner's (and Maryott before that), because the 1 and 2 year survival and prospering rate is low compared to plants I get from other sellers. I know it isn't my growing techniques because I have 500 other varieties that are thriving in my 5b/6a gardens. But what arrives as these big meaty, bunches of fans either dies off and doesn't survive the first year or after 1 or 2 seasons, remains struggling as 1-2 wimpy fans.

It makes me sad because they are some really pretty flowers.

I sometimes think some sellers use the generally accepted statement that daylilies are tough plants to get away with poor handling and shipping.

I think it's terrible heat in most of the country right now that yellowed the leaves so rapidly. I never have mine shipped from Shreiner's until September. But those plants should be fine once they're potted, and should start showing healthy green growth in two weeks.

Many of Maryott's intros are too tender to survive in Zone 5. Some of them even struggle in my Zone 7A.

I asked to have them shipped in the fall, but they refused, indicated they could be out of stock. I didn't understand how they would be out of stock if I paid for them in May. A lot of Schreiner's plant are tender for me as well, but the pretty faces lure me back in.

The heat and lack of rain has been brutal this summer. I was in Seattle for a week and came back to dried beds and small plants. I think I lost a lot of plants but time will tell. Glare

I received my order from Schreiner's the other day as well, and they looked identical to yours. Schreiner's has never been my first-choice daylily seller, but their plants have never looked as bad as this year.
I always soak my newly-received plants in Sea Magic and SuperThrive, sometimes up to a week or so if I can't get to them immediately; it does great things for the roots!

I have no doubt that they will survive. They are pretty tough.

I will keep you guys posted on their progress. I'm in Beaufort, South Carolina for a nephew's Marine Corp graduation and can't wait to get back to my plants. I watered them before I left and hoping for the best!

I bought a few on sale from Schreiner's three years ago. One of them bloomed yet that season, and the flower didn't look right. They offered to replace it right away, but I decided to give it time to settle in first. By this year, it was obviously not the right plant, and I let Schreiner's know, asking if they could tell me what I actually had. They did not know the identity of the NOID, and I thought we left it at that. Then yesterday this arrived. A nice surprise!

As for the plants not being cold hardy, I've not found that to be the case. The only one out of that bunch that did not prosper for me was Double Cherries Duet, and I think perhaps the groundhog ate that one. I know that Ginny G. (Legal lily) grows DCD in her Iowa garden, where it does well.

Most of my Schreiner orders have been for iris. I've never had any issues with the company. As hot as it's been, I appreciate that this daylily was not bagged in plastic even though the shredded paper dried out. I'd rather have them a little yellowed instead of poached in its own juices.

@hawkeye_daddy .
Those should be nice and green in a couple of weeks. I doubt mine will bloom this season but they look great after watering every few days.

I hate that messy shredded paper!

I like Schreiners. Never received any looking like that though. In all the plants I have received, two died over the winter and they replaced and one wasn't the right plant, they did know the name of the one I did receive though. They were out of Jane's Prism and sent be Buffalo Bill instead that one has yet to bloom. They seem to go out of their way to make things right. A lot of my new plants from any seller take a year off before blooming and some have been 2 or 3 years. Most have been worth the wait.

Back when Bill Maryott was still selling his own daylilies, I ordered Paul Aucoin- transplanted it in October and thanks to a beyond mild fall, it bloomed in November looking nothing like PA. Not even close to my eye. I emailed him with a pic of it and was assured that it was indeed PA.

Next spring, it bloomed, and looked exactly like it was supposed to- I sent another email and a new photo. Bill was complimentary, saying mine looked better than the flowers he'd seen on it. Super nice man and I was amazed that he not just took the time to respond, but also to converse about daylilies.

It sounds like Bill chose the right company to continue his expectation of great service and making it right for the customer.

Update!
After about a month my Schreiner's order looks like today. I placed them in a shady area and watered generously and they look great.

The three plants I got from them a few years ago are currently in daylily heaven. Thanks for the Z:5 warning @shive1. In all fairness I got one of the three plants from another source last fall, and it did not survive the winter either.
