I am now starting the 19th Daylily of the Day poll .... If you want to continue to review cultivars, please add some daylily names in a post on this thread!

The last poll we had was back in January 2022. I am asking members to please pick cultivars that they OWN. The more members that own a cultivar, the better (to have numerous evaluations). Please make sure that you post the correct name and spelling of the cultivars you list. You can list up to 20 cultivars that you actually own and are willing to post an evaluation for when the cultivar is featured as the Daylily of the Day. (A new cultivar will be posted every other day.)

List your 20 (or less) cultivars with just the full cultivar name only! (See MY example below.)
Example List:

Beautiful Edgings
Wind Wishes
Awesome Blossom

And don't forget that you can post an evaluation at any time to any of the Daylily of the Day threads. An acorn will be awarded for each evaluation. You can post "annual" evaluations of any cultivars at least a year after your previous evaluation of that cultivar. (And earn another acorn tip!) Previously featured Daylilies of the Day cultivar threads can be found in this forum. They are listed in alphabetical order:
https://garden.org/barn/potd/a...

Please check the above link, to make sure that any cultivars you list have not already been a featured daylily of the day cultivar, before adding to your list. Thanks!

This poll will end on Sunday, January 8, 2023. (That gives about 2 weeks for people to respond to this poll.)

Thanks for helping choose more cultivars for evaluations!!! We appreciate your help and enthusiasm! Evaluations aren't possible without YOU!

REMEMBER - You can earn an acorn for each evaluation of both current and past cultivars if they are new evaluations or your evaluation is a year apart from your last evaluation of any cultivars. (NOTE: If, for some reason, you don't receive an acorn for an evaluation, please tree-mail me so that I can make sure that you do get an acorn.)

If there is little interest in keeping the Daylily of the Day feature going with more cultivars, then I will request that Dave discontinue it going forward. I leave it up to the members here on the Daylily forum.

Becky, I love the Daylily of the Day feature and really appreciate your willingness to organize and coordinate it. I also have been spending some time this winter looking at the older Daylily of the Day threads and contributing reviews to the ones I have in my garden. I know these reviews are extremely helpful to me and other growers.

I think the daylily of the day coupled with the database is one of the best resources for pre-selection of daylilies for purchases. I hope this feature continues.

I'm working on a list, but keep thinking that I would prefer to know about some of the cultivars on my want list or "wonder list", rather than exploring what I already have. For example, rather than giving details about Chill, I would love to hear about Alina. While it's fun to rave about what we are impressed by in our own garden, and it makes for guaranteed content, it's more useful to hear about unknown-to-us CVs so we can decide if they are worth the money. We already do that, don't we, or am I getting mixed up? Shrug!

I think the idea is, we tell about our own plants and read everyone's evaluations of theirs so we know how other people's plants are doing in gardens across America ( and elsewhere!) The problem with picking random Daylilies is that there is no guarantee that anyone has them or has any info about growing them, so the slot is wasted. In evaluating your own cvs, you are providing others with information that's hopefully useful to them, in case they are considering purchasing the plant.

Justine, remember that the reviews you provide will be easy to find when people look up the cultivars in the database. An experience you share about a cultivar may help someone who looks it up years from now.

I am sure that I have other plants to recommend, but I wanted to make sure I put the plant on the list. I am always interested in hearing how plants perform in my zone.

I still wish there was an easy way to preview potentially new plant performance without a member starting a new thread on each plant. Just wishing. Registration details sometimes don't tell one much, especially in terms of regional performance.

I think that is because so few people are growing some of the newest daylilies that there really just isn't any performance to evaluate in some areas. I am happy to review daylilies from my gardens, but... I am growing in zone 3 (which I do not see listed for very many other folks).

So I am not always sure that my info is relevant for someone (for example) who is gardening in zone 7. Yet again: isn't it nice to discover that a daylily that does grow well for me in zone 3 'also' does great for someone gardening in zone 8?

I think that is where / how some of the Lenington All-American contenders are found... from the 'collective' gardens where the daylilies are successful in both the cold north and the warm and humid south. And that's when I feel that my review may help someone else (when they are trying to decide whether to take a chance on a daylily they do not personally know).

But that is also why, when I wrote my suggestions for review, I did not include several that I have which were just registered this year (or are 'future intros' / not listed yet at all). I just don't think we are ready for a daylily review for one that's so new that only one or several people currently are growing it. There is just not 'enough' feedback. Thinking

Justine - Zoia said it quite well as to why we don't really do a want/wonder list of daylilies. To get evaluations, we need to have gardeners who actually grow those cultivars. There are thousands and thousands of registered daylily cultivars, but most people on this forum don't have the vast majority of them. So there would not be much of a point if a daylily is featured, but no one provides an evaluation. And sadly, there have been a small number of cultivars that have been featured that have zero reviews. Not sure why the person who listed the cultivar didn't leave an evaluation? But it was featured with no response.

I understand wanting to know more about a cultivar. But it really depends on members here on NGA who have that particular cultivar and are willing to leave a review - good, bad, or indifferent.

Thanks to all those who replied to Justine's inquiry.

Becky,

I wonder if the ones 'not' reviewed just got 'missed' when they were posted? I know I have had busy times at work when I did not get on for a few days and saw that I had a daylily in my garden posted several days before... I try to keep track, but maybe I am not the only one with that problem.

I just hope we get enough responses and active interest to keep this thread going, it's great to see what daylilies are doing in other gardens. (I have definitely used info here to make choices!)

So, a big Thank You! to @beckygardener for all your time and the acorns.

Yes, Thank You! Becky, and thanks to others who made good points about the function of Daylily of the Day format. I went through the list of past DOTD cultivars and it was great to see many older posts I hadn't noticed before. When I have look up plants in database, I have just looked in the plants database because I didn't want to wade through old threads, but then I missed the DOTD.

Robin, do you own any of those?

Becky, can we post more than twenty names? I sweated to get it down to twenty, but I have plenty more in my garden that don't have evaluations yet.
