What follows is a description of the plant you think it may be. However this plant does not have the hairy basal leaves referred to in the text below. If you look at the picture you can see the leaves are very shiny not hairy at all.
"This is an easily identified plant in most of its NC range, though L. villosus can look similar when not in bloom. L. diffusus has several "stems" that grow from a single base, producing an abundance of large, very hairy "basal" evergreen leaves at ground level."

The leaf shape of the plant in your picture isn't typical of L. perennis but does look like L. diffusus, which is the reason for my inquiry. Results of google search images of L. diffusus:

My apologies! I found this plant again today in a different place much further south in Richmond county. I photographed it and started looking at it under the keys and discovered that you are absolutely correct about the identification on my previous plant. It's not perennis it's definitely diffusus. Thank you again for state your thoughts, and letting me know about this. I keep these emails to refer back to, and sometimes they come in handy. My sole interest is to be correct. I'm gonna Propose the change tonight. I'm also gonna post these new photographs as I have them in a different location. Again thank you for your information and keep on plugging away and keeping stuff straight.
WT I tip my hat to you.
