Thread OP

I picked up a bundle of these onions from Home Depot back in February thinking they were red onions. They've grown pretty high - greens 2'-3' - and I harvested a few to have a look, but instead of the bulbs I was expecting, they're more like skinny red scallions. Does anyone know what variety these are?

There are various varieties going by the name of red bunching onions, red spring onions or red scallions. Looking at the photo my best guess would be Welsh Onion Red Dragon variety.

Home depot in most areas vend Bonnie plants. The only red they currently list is a generic short day onion. If so, It is too late for them to bulb. If an intermediate or a long day onion They will bulb as soon as they get sufficient daylight. For long day onions that occurs in late June -July. Your photo does not appear to be Allium fistulosum ( Bunching onion)

I disagree. I have been growing Red Bunching onions for years and those in the photo look very much like what I harvest. Bulbing onions would already be taking shape with tops 2' to 3' tall as mentioned in the original post.

@ehart3000 sometimes location matters to onions, I can not plant those onion bunches unless I do it in late Fall where I am, and if there isn't enough fertilizer and rain, they stay small no matter what. Where is your location since there are several shippers that provide to HD and L, etc, they could be from Bonnie, Dixon Farms, Monrovia, etc...

Where are you located? Short-day onions for bulbs are normally grown in the southern part of the US and planted in late summer to grow over the winter (when the days are short). Long-day onions are planted in the spring in the north, when the days are getting longer. You can try leaving them in the ground to see if they will "bulb up" if you aren't in a hot part of the country, but regardless of what type of onion they actually are you can certainly use them for scallions now. (On the other hand, if you are somewhere in the north the onions in your photo aren't too much larger than the plants that I started from seed in February, which I am just now planting out and expect to harvest bulbs sometime in September.)
