Filled all the bird feeders this afternoon! We're snacking away today, figured they should do the same. There are dozens of birds on the deck all day long, and if they vanish I know a hawk must be near!

Happy New Year! I am cruising all the seeds I want for this year and trying to show some restraint Whistling
I filled all the feeders yesterday too Jill and woke up to the wren singing. It was a nice way to start the New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!

I was in Dollar Tree yesterday, and they already have seeds out. Not the greatest variety, but they are 4 packets for $1.00.

Happy New Year to all.....I did the Audubon Christmas Bird Count yesterday at my feeder...very disappointing....count was down. The organizer feels it's due to the abundance of food this winter...there are a lot of water birds though as all the ponds & lakes, rivers, are open...

I have noticed less birds at our feeders this winter, too.

Yikes. Just went into my greenhouse and I noticed all these little white bugs on all of my pepper plants. I suspect the lower temps in the greenhouse 40's to 50's at night have put a strain on them, made them weak, and they have become susceptible to some bug.

I removed them immediately as I don't want any of my cold crop plants to get infected. The lettuce, spinach, cabbage and broccoli seem to be doing fine so far.

We have the usual mob here... when my brother and his family were here Saturday, he looked at all the activity around the feeders and said he wondered if a storm was coming... nope, just business as usual at the FlyBy Cafe!

House sparrows, house finches, and juncos make up the majority, but we see some other sparrows, wrens (carolina & house), chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches, doves, downy woodpeckers (when there's suet or PB on the menu), occasionally a blue jay or nuthatch.
We're all learners, doers, teachers.

I removed the 10 pepper plants (Shishito and Johnny Nardello) from my greenhouse yesterday. I found 1 plant that was covered by these tiny white bugs. Not sure what they were, but I decided before they move to the other peppers, or even worse my experimental winter plantings, I was evicting them. The peppers were still producing, although not quite as well since the nighttime temps in the greenhouse can reach the low 40's. Last night it went down into the upper 20's outside, so I'm sure the pepper plants are finished off now and will go into the compost pile.

Edit: Geez...Just realized I posted about this yesterday. Senior moment!

Speaking of senior moment, this is very funny if you never watched it.

Oh, I have many senior moments! Worse since Covid....Jill, I've seen all those birds at my feeder, but not for the count...naturally! I don't know if you have Merlin on your phone, but it helps me with ID....I can't tell one song or chirp from another....Jim, sorry you lost your peppers....I know the Shishitos really produced for you this year...I'm not sure what veggies I'll be planting this year, but maybe more than last summer.

Probably whiteflies Jim. I had them all over some tomato plants a few years back.

We started out with SNOW! So happy to see things getting dusted with pristine white. But Josie and I took a walk around noon, and it has changed to sleet. I think now it's raining, and yet it's 31 degrees. I WANT SNOW!!!

I know snow is a problem on the roads and a nuisance to shovel, but I still love it. There's something about a snowy winter landscape, sparkling under a blue sky or gleaming in the moonlight... everything is just transformed.

Thinking of my garden sleeping under a blanket of snow is just much nicer than thinking of it covered in cold mud.

I'm not saying I want to measure snow cover in feet all winter (if I did, I'd move to Colorado), but I really like a few inches every now and then.
