critterologist said: I know snow is a problem on the roads and a nuisance to shovel, but I still love it. There's something about a snowy winter landscape, sparkling under a blue sky or gleaming in the moonlight... everything is just transformed.

Thinking of my garden sleeping under a blanket of snow is just much nicer than thinking of it covered in cold mud.

I'm not saying I want to measure snow cover in feet all winter (if I did, I'd move to Colorado), but I really like a few inches every now and then.

I think they offer treatment for this kind of thinking now. Rolling on the floor laughing Grumbling SNOW

My daughter agrees with me, but I'm pretty sure DH thinks we're both crazy. He wants to move to FL. I'm considering it, but only if we can do some fall and winter trips to places that have seasons. Does that make me an anti-snowbird?

I'll take the cold OK....but FL's heat in summer is awful....I just don't like 8" of snow at once, then melting, then freezing with black ice all over the place...I managed to get my garbage toter up to the road yesterday, but not the recycling...no place to put it!

I lived in Florida for a year back in the 80's. I actually thought the summer was more comfortable than the summers up this way. It gets hot in Florida, not hotter than here, but it does not have the humidity we have. In addition, it seems like in Florida, your always in an AC building, at the pool or the beach. I lived just outside of Tampa.

Not that I would move but I wouldn't mind living in a warmer place. I don't need the snow and can not stand the cold. I can get cool but feel like I don't ever get warm. I would be outside all the time!

When I was younger I spent lots of time in Florida. Both summer and winter. I didn't mind the humid summers.

We left for home April 1st.....nice to see the daffs & stone walls, & misty days again after the glaring FL sun...now I'm thinking the sun wasn't so bad!

I did a little cleanup today before more rain. Cut back all the spent coneflowers that I knew had empty seed heads. Filled in a few holes my granddog dug ( Grumbling ) before I have mud puddles. It was just nice to be able to be outside in January!

I've spent very little on bird seed this winter......enough seed pods around to keep the birds happy...yes, Jim, I really love the dahlias, they usually start blooming in late Aug. & go to the 1st frost.....lots of nice color for that time of the year...last year, I started coral bells from seeds...ended up with 4 strong plants...checked on them after the snow...they look good...

Bought new temperature/humidity sensors and base stations for my greenhouse. The old ones are almost 8 years old and the base stations don't always work right. I put one sensor outside and one sensor in the greenhouse. I have one base station in my office and the other in the kitchen. This way I can see at a glance what the temp/humidity is outside vs. the greenhouse. These new ones also come with alarms if one of the parameters drops below what you want. That is most important for the greenhouse temperature/humidity.

Going to be a cold one tonight at 15 degrees. I will be watching the greenhouse closely as the evening proceeds. My goal is to keep it at 35+ which is doable.

Jim, do you have a heater on a thermostat out there or are you relying on your phase change panels and pond to moderate greenhouse temps?

With it going below 20 (down to 14 tonight), I do have a heater on a thermostat. Right now, at 11:30, it is 20 degrees outside and 44 in the greenhouse. Unfortunately, we haven't had much sun at all lately, so the daytime temps inside the greenhouse have not been that high (50's), so the pond has been cooling and the PCM panels are "decorations" right now.

As long as daytime temps are higher than night temps, I think your pond and flooring are excellent heat sinks. But I'm relieved to know you're not relying on passive heating!

It did get down to 14. The greenhouse stayed at 43 degrees all night. I'm sure keeping that heater on medium kept it from going down into the 30's.
