Thread OP
San Francisco
Good day. My question? I have a cutting from a Douglas fir. It was a trim from a Christmas tree. A 1/2 inch thick, 2 inch round cut was made to the bottom of the tree with one small branch growing from this cut. It was placed in and has been living in a vase with water for over a month. I am wondering if it can be transferred to something larger in an attempt to try and grow it? Don't know if that is possible. But willing to try.
Thanks
Philip

According to my propagation books, it can be done but not easily. Here is a summary of what they say:

Current seasons growth from 10 - 12 year old sheared plants in December - January. Use 5000 ppm IBA and 5000 ppm NNA in sand:peat (5:1 by volume). bottom heat (65 - 70), air temperature 50 and long day lighting. Success rate is about 10%

Why bother?
Why is this important? DFs don't even grow that well in SF.

I think it will be a fun experiment. Go for it!

That would be it right there. I have a lot more failures than successes but I keep trying... just for the fun of it.

Douglas firs grew on my property in Sebastopol, about 70 miles north of SF. I agree with above comments... Why not try if it interests you?!

I have one in my yard here. I didn't think it would survive the heat but it's beautiful.
