I think this will be our 15th MAG spring seed swap!

DATE: SATURDAY, Feb. 10, 2024

TIME: noon to 4:30 pm

NOTE: This is an IN PERSON swap only. If you live nearby or will be visiting nearby, we'd love to have you! I will not mail seeds.

WHAT: lunch (noon to 2 pm) followed by seed swap party

HOW: You can do your seed trading in advance via the Seed Swap Tool, in person at the swap, or both. The Seed Swap tool is found under "Useful Tools" at the top of the page or here https://garden.org/apps/swap/ Click the "join this swap" button and you're in! If you haven't used the tool before, please watch Dave's really useful video tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

WHERE: Frederick, MD, probably Chef Lin Buffet but stay tuned

WHO: participants in DG and ATP mid-Atlantic forums and their guests; children welcome! (no pets; it's a restaurant)

COST: To be determined (I want to stop by to check the availability & condition of the back room and to get the current prices for buffet with drinks.)

BRING: Extra seeds, either commercial or self-harvested. If you're going to split seeds into smaller packs, try to do that ahead of time, because it gets crazy! We'll have a "free to good home" pile also. Cuttings are fine, and a small potted plant would be great as a gift item, but otherwise please DO NOT bring plants into the restaurant.

Most seeds are viable 5 years or so, if stored dry & cool, but please don't offer seeds (even for the "free" pile) that are unlikely to sprout. Rule of thumb: bring seeds that you would be happy to receive.

Most people bring a small item for the "gift table," which is sort of an expanded door prize thing that we like to do.

Most of all, bring your enthusiasm -- we're going to have a great time!

DIRECTIONS:
~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Directions to Chef Lin
~-~-~-~-~-~-~
The restaurant is in Prospect Plaza, at 417 S. Jefferson St, near a nest of interchanges where 15, 340, 40, and 270 all come together. This makes it both easy to get to from different directions, and hard to describe, but these directions seem to work well. McDonalds is at the front of the Plaza, easy to spot. Chef Lin is toward the center of this strip mall.

Combine these directions with a look at the map! type "417 S Jefferson Frederick, MD" into google, but do NOT try to follow the really confusing step by step directions, just use it for a map)

From the north, coming down 15 South. Get off at the Jefferson Street exit, turning LEFT (going east). Cross over the highway, and Prospect Plaza will be immediately on your LEFT (turn LEFT at the light).

From the south, along 15-340 North (the two highways merge together just south of Frederick): Stay on 340. (Don't get off onto 15 North when it diverges.) 340 more or less becomes Jefferson Street. Keep left. You'll cross the bridge over the highway, and then turn LEFT at the light into Prospect Plaza.

From the south, along 270N (coming up from the DC beltway): Get off at the Jefferson Street exit and turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp (east onto Jefferson). Make an immediate LEFT at the next light to turn into Prospect Plaza.

From the east (Baltimore), you'll be on 70 West. Take exit 53b, 15 North. Take the first exit onto Jefferson Street. Turn RIGHT at the end of the ramp (east onto Jefferson). Make an immediate LEFT at the next light to turn into Prospect Plaza.

From the west: you'll be on 70 East. Take the exit for 15 North. You're now on 15-340. Stay on 340. (Don't get off onto 15 North when it diverges.) 340 more or less becomes Jefferson Street. Stay to the left. You'll cross the bridge over the highway, and then turn left at the light into Prospect Plaza.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Dutch Plant Farm
DutchPlantFarm.com
~-~-~-~-~-~-~
From Dutch Plant Farm (151 Baughmans Lane) to Chef Lin: Turn LEFT onto 40 East. Take the first RIGHT onto 15 South. Take the first exit, Jefferson Street. Turn LEFT onto Jefferson Street, cross over the highway, and then turn LEFT at the light into Prospect Plaza.

Getting to DPF. Dutch Plant Farm is off "the Golden Mile," highway 40, W Patrick St. At the corner of 40 and Baughman's Lane, there's a shopping center with a JoAnn's. DPF is just behind the shopping center. Coming from 15 onto 40W, you'd turn RIGHT at the first light onto Baughmans Lane and then take the 2nd entrance on the LEFT into DPF. (The 1st left is the side entrance into the shopping plaza.)

I'll check on the state of the "party room" at the back of Chef Lin next time we're there and also calculate the current price for buffet plus tea or soft drink plus tax & tip.

If anybody would like to suggest an alternative venue, I'm all ears! I'd like to keep it below $20 per person, and having an area where we can set up some space for seed swapping would be ideal. Since we can do a lot of swapping in advance via the NGA seed swap tool, any space where it's easy to get up and move around and change seats as we go through seeds and chat together would also work. A table area for the seed drop bags and for gift items should be taken into consideration also, but I don't think it's strictly necessary to have a separate room.

I have tentatively set the date for Feb. 3, with Feb. 10 as a backup date in case of bad weather. If Feb 10 works better for the majority, we can switch dates. We can start trading 1 week ahead (with a x2 multiplier) or 2 weeks ahead (with a x1 multiplier). In either case, I'll increase the number of dibs to something very large the last day or two so any latecomers can dib their fill

Price drop on Atlas 270 garden gloves from an Anazon seller... I ordered a 4 pack of medium gloves for $4.25 each. LMK if you want 1 or 2 pairs in M. I don't know what color they'll send, but I want pink or purple. :-)

If there's a lot of interest, I can check around for a good price on larger packs of gloves. There are a lot of similar gloves on the market now, but Atlas (Showa) is still my first choice. Breathable, washable, nitrile coating on palms goes up to fingertips (not on back of hand or back of fingers), thin enough that I can feel what I'm doing better than with most gloves. They're the only ones I can stand to wear.

Actually, I just looked at Palmflex. Mixed colors (pink, purple, orange, green) or single color packs of 12 (purple, pink, or green) are $4 each including tax.

Left to my own devices, I'd order a dozen pink L and a dozen purple M. (I often wear mixed size pairs since my left hand swells and is happier with a L.) But I can order mixed colors instead and get other sizes if there's interest.

LMK if you're interested and I'll do a group tree-mail to organize an order.

I would love to come but prefer Feb 10. On Feb 3rd, I'm on a committee organizing the seed swap in Westminster and wouldn't be able to make it there until 2:30 pm. If you can move the date, I can come to both. But do what is best for everyone.

Will miss you all, but that is the week my sister and I are going on a cruise. Jill, do the gloves come in small by chance? Green? And what is the minimum order on that?
“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

If anybody else has date preferences, PLMK. We'll go with the date that works best for the majority.

The only issue so far with Feb. 10 is that we wouldn't have a "snow date" the following weekend, because I will likely not be available then. We could still do the 10th and a snow date either Feb. 17 or Feb 24.

I know we could also move to one date earlier, but I'm in the thick of the tomato seed swap I'm hosting, so I need the extra week.

Chantell, so neither date works for you, correct?

Palmflex does free shipping over $80, so you'd save on shipping by ordering with me. If nobody else wants small gloves, then it would be a dozen small in green. Or you could order from Amazon and get 4 small gloves in mixed colors, for only a little more per pair.

Not sure how between my sister and I we managed to plan 3 getaways within a month time but we are heading out for a long weekend this coming weekend and then I will be down south for the cruise 2/2-2/11/24. Just let me know what works for the majority. My schedule is too crazy to plan around clearly. Rolling on the floor laughing

Does anybody do a lot of tomato canning? I have a large food mill so don't need this hopper-style strainer anymore. It's similar to this one and has multiple screens: https://www.harvestessentials....

Trying not to drag along a bunch of extra stuff if there's no interest in it...
