Hi all! My grandmother who grew lived all her life in Iowa had a favorite rose. She told me what it was a long time ago. I ordered one of these rose bushes (this was before the internet), but it turned out they would not ship to Texas. They were located in California... near my parents. So I just had them ship the plant to my mom. Well, she loved that rose bush and it seemed to do well (in Monterey, CA). It recently died, and she has asked me to get her another one for her birthday. But I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. I've asked all my cousins and aunts if they remember... and they do not. I have pictures my mom sent of the one she had. If you have any idea what it's called, please let me know. Sorry for the long back-story, but I thought it might help to know that it probably grew in Iowa and California. And it was around when my grandmother was growing up... maybe the 1930s and on from there.

Looks like Talisman, which was very popular in the 1930s.

Thank you so much! I think that's it! The name does ring a bell. Now the issue is... where can I buy one and have it shipped to CA? I'm looking online and I don't see them for sale.

Burlington and Greenmantle, both in California, are shown as sources on HMF. Greenmantle lists it on their website.

What's a charming rose! I love these early hybrid teas. I wonder if it's prone to black spot And how hardy it is.

I grew Talisman and its climbing sport for many years. They're said to be hardy to zone 6, but I'm in zone 9, so I have no personal experience with their hardiness. Both suffered from black spot, but so do all of my other roses except for the Ping Lim roses.

The climber is slightly lighter in color and is amazingly vigorous. It grew to about 20 feet tall and 12 feet wide in my garden.

Beautiful! I didn't think anyone in California got black spot though. I guess it's a big state! Good to know about the Ping Lim roses; I grow Day Dream and it has become huge this year.

I'm in southeastern Pennsylvania. My mother's favorite rose was a climbing Talisman. It grew on a trellis in the front of her home for 66 years and produced many bouquets of flowers every year. It was one of the heartiest roses my family has ever grown and never showed any signs of black spot. Had we known the next owner of her home was going to tear it out, we would have cut it back and transferred it here when she had to move in with me in her 90's. Everyone in her old neighborhood has told me they miss that rose and the bouquets my mom used to give them.
