Companion Planting: A Reliable Option or Nonsense?

By wildflowers
August 29, 2010

So what about Companion Planting? Is it merely folk lore and old wives' tales without any scientific evidence to back it up? Or can you create a beautiful garden that flourishes in rhythm with the natural balance that mother earth has to offer (without the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals) by using companion planting practices? Maybe some traditions and folklore were created for a reason.

I really enjoyed reading this and it brought back some memories of what my grandparents, parents said and did.
I hope you will write more on this subject.

I hope Trish read this part "If you can find a pregnant woman to plant your garden, everything will thrive." Bumper crop this year Trish?

thank you Connie!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! How wonderful to have those memories... I missed out on spending time with mine!

I was thinking of having a little sitdown with my hubby. He was raised by his grandparents and has some wonderful stories about how they farmed as well as his great-grandparents while they were around.

Yes, we must find out if Trish had a bumper crop this year!! Smiling Those days are gone for me! LOL! But I just found out this afternoon that my son's wife is pregnant... Whistling

Thanks again!
Christine

yes, have that talk, those elders knew more than we do about such things and get that DIL out planting a winter crop! LOL
My preggie days are long gone too.
My grandmother always planted by the farmers almanac. It was her bible and that woman could grow anything, she had to, no husband and 5 kids to feed during the depression. They are grew up healthy too! Amazing. Her daughter, my mother is still alive and will be 90 in January. She always makes me plant society garlic in the rose bed.

This is a wonderful article Christine. I really enjoyed the companion suggestions, especially those against that darned hornworm. It's always good to be reminded of these practices over and over again. Each time I read something like this, I adopt one more such practice and my garden and the planet at a little bit better for it. Thanks for taking the time to write such a great article. Smiling
