I have a few bags of the premixed seeds. Do these seeds care if they are sprinkled under or above mulch? I do not use mulch that has weedpreventing claims.

The seeds would rather be in contact with the soil. They may also like just a bit of soil (1/8 inch) covering them. The mulch would be for established plants.

Wiidflowers need a little soil. The mulch may prevent some varieties from germinating.
Maybe you can scratch the mulch aside in patches, and sow the seed?

Pulling the mulch aside in certain places sounds like a good idea. When do you plan to sow your seed?

Biennials like Sweet William, Siberian wallflower, For-get-me-Nots,
I sow now, as they make it through our winters.
Last year I did many wildflowers as a fall sowing,but did not get good germination.
Next season, because this is zone 3, I will seed most wildflowers in March, which is early spring here.

I sprinkled a bag of hummingbird/butterfly seed mix in May and they seemed to be doing good but I had a hip replacement in June so have not been able to keep the grass from almost taking over. I also added herbs for the caterpillers. Well, maybe I helped a little bit and next season I should be able to bend and pull out the grass.

Wildflowers from seed can be tricky, sometimes when we want something to grow in a certain place the conditions for it may not be right and it won't work. Then sometimes when conditions are right it just happens by itself and and it is beautiful.
Just keep on trying and they will reward you when the time is right.

Many of those wildflowers are likely to be just fine, Rosykay. If it becomes possible for you or a helper to mow it off or chop it down in late fall it would probably be even better. Once they have a good start they can grow on their own within the grasses just fine. We haven't done anything with our wildflower meadow for several years now. It's self-sustaining at this point, and an ever-changing source of joy...for us, and for all the winged visitors that frequent it.

I gazed across the pasture at the front wildflower meadow from the veggie garden today. It looks gloriously yellow! Might have to find the time to do some butterfly watching yet this afternoon.

The last time I was out there it was threatening rain, and the butterflies were hiding.
