I planted Written on the Wind early last summer and it's done very well, blooming this year.
All of its blooms have a strange folding, and at first glance look like they want to double.
I've checked the database for this variety, and didn't see anything that resembles these odd flowers. Would anyone be able to enlighten me?

On that cultivar I would say it is just trying to double. Just about everyone of our daylilies will try and do this at some point. Some just have a little of it and some will be fully doubles.

Keith, Written On The Wind doubles for us at least a couple of times most years. We have grown it for at least five years. I will try to find a picture of it doubling this summer. Time for bed now.

Written On The Wind doubling in 2010


I downloaded the pictures on my camera tonight and here is the picture of WOTW doubling earlier this month. I had given up finding a picture of it as a full double.

@OldGardener : how great that you can grow Smoky Mountain Autumn (SMA) in southern California! : ) Years ago on Dave's Garden someone on the East Coast (who is quite knowledgeable about daylilies) warned me against buying SMA - after I became infatuated with its color - because it was considered a 'hard dormant.' In other words, it needed a true freeze (not just a couple of hours in the early mornings hours) in the winter to prosper. So, I didn't buy it.

But, then when I saw a pic of it from a San Francisco East Bay gardener, I thought - well: maybe it might be happy here on the other side of the Bay. Great to know from you that I can go ahead and order it! : ) If it's happy in your garden down south, then surely it'll be happy in mine. : ) Thanks!

Fortunately, I purchased both hard and soft dormant daylilies before I read that hard dormants would not grow in my area (I heard the same thing that you described and was concerned). I checked my records and Smoky Mountain Autumn increased 250% last year (from 4 to 10 fans) and appears to be increasing rapidly this year, too. So, I think it is quite happy!

My best increase last year was also a dormant, albeit a soft dormant, and my worst increase was a hard dormant (0 increase but put on a beautiful display of blooms). I just walked back and checked, though, and I now have double the fan count so perhaps the 0 increase last year was due to it settling in?? Due solely to the observations in my own garden, I now think that the hard dormant rule may be a bit too generalized - perhaps it is more of a cultivar by cultivar issue?

Great pictures! My WOTW has the extra growth on almost every bloom; not sure what you would call a partial double (quartering)?
It's kind of neat...surprised it wasn't mentioned in it's description.

Keith it may not have done it for the hybridizer or they did not observe it doing it and since it's not a consistent thing it wouldn't be listed in the description since it may or may not do it. Now if it's like Fred's sometimes pleated, cristated, seedling then I'm sure he will put it in the description as doing this at times, but with a random doubling I doubt any hybridizer lists that unless it does it a high percentage of the time. I have things doubling this year that I have never seen double before and they may never do it again. I have never seen WOTW do that here.
