I have this plant growing in my garden, I love the leaves and you would think I should be able to remember such nice foliage, but my mind is a blank and there is no tag around it that I have been able to find so far. Any help will be appreciated, I feel it must be something I planted last year that has returned.

Thanks, I did actually plant some catmint 'Walkers Low" last year, looking back in my notes, but to me that does not look right, what do you think?

plants in the mint family have square stems? Does it smell when you crush the leaves? Does it root along the ground and come up in patches here and there?

Just went out and checked, no square stems, no mint smell when the leaves are crushed, and just this one clump. Thanks Frillylily, elimination is always a good thing when trying to ID a plant.

I tried zooming in on the second picture to see the stem; and with my bad eyesight it does sorta looks squarish but my eyes aren't the best, LOL.

Could be Nepeta (Catmint) For comparison, check out some of these photo's Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Walker's Low')

The foliage is all wrong for Nepeta 'Walker's Low'.

Did you happen to plant a Veronica, such as Veronica hybrid 'Sunny Border Blue'?

Well, I did find that I planted some 'Goodness Grows' Speedwell, veronica. Could that be it!

Well, to me the Veronica leaves don't even resemble my plant's leaves. Guess that is why I am here asking others!

Seedfork, I agree with you that Veronica 'Goodness Grows' leaves don't look right at all.

Veronica hybrid 'Sunny Border Blue' has big, puckered leaves that look a lot like your plant. It's a hybrid though so I'm not sure if there are other cultivars with similar leaves.

Yes, now in that picture the leaves do very much resemble my plant. Thanks, I will wait for blooms.

Does your plant have sturdy, round stems that are a bit hairy? The reason I am asking is that I have a NOID plant that looks just like yours. I know it's not 'Goodness Grows' Veronica spicata because that one actually has the original label and is planted directly behind the NOID one. Last year my plant had purplish flower spikes that were very long lasting.

I'll be watching to see when yours gets identified.

Yes my stems are sturdy and round, I will check tomorrow about "a bit hairy". I grew 'Goodness Grows' Veronica and Mealy Cup Salvia last year and they look alot alike to me. Not sure which one is blooming right now. I bought and planted 'Blue Bedder' salvia and later found out it was also 'Mealy Cup". So now I have a lot of the almost same looking plants.

Salvia is in the same family as mint and will have square stems. Also 'Blue Bedder' is a cultivar of Salvia farinacea, which is Mealy Cup Sage.

Seedfork, the plant in your last photo is Salvia farinacea. It's still in bud at this stage. (At least, I can't clearly make out any flowers that have opened yet in the photo, just the blueish calyces. Either way, it's mostly at the in-bud stage.) When both this and your Veronica 'Goodness Grows' start blooming, take a close look at the individual flowers that make up the spire of blooms. You'll see that the flowers are actually shaped differently and then you'll be able to tell them apart in the future. The Salvia farinacea bloom will have a small hood at the top and a lip at the bottom.
