Hi! My name is Terry Jones. My wife, Debbi and I have been in love with Plumeria since the mid '90's. We have had up 200 plants and up to 32 species, but with freezes and attrition we were down to a little over 100 last year. We live in Clear Lake Texas (Between Houston and Galveston) The freezes are usually not too bad..we haven't had many after 2010, so we had many plants up around 10'...life was good. But January and February 2014 was horrific with it hitting freezing 20 times (we put everything in the ground).
We were pro-active by digging up 60 plants up to 8', cut up 40 which gave us around 200 cuttings ranging from 16"' to 6 ft tall, and tried to cover some large 10'+ plants with seed pods. We eventually lost the ones we tried to cover up. We did manage to scrape together and have 20 seedlings growing right now...so we are happy with that. The cuttings are doing good and is another long story on dealing with that many thins spring. The stumps from the 40 we cut up are currently re-sprouting and will turn into bushes.

I was invited to come here by GigiPlumeria...I got to know her on FLickr and we have become friends through our common love...so I am excited to be here. We are not experts, but we do have a lot of "knowledge from the trenches"! haha

btw...most of our plants have came from seedlings that we grew in 2004 from a Samoan Fluff and an Aztec Gold.

As a side note...I do a lot HDR photography which gives the pictures a strange look, but allows me to express my artistic side. ;-)

Terry. What exactly is HDR photography? I love the array of pictures that you posted.

With that many plumeria over the years, I would say you are "expert". Last winter was hard on all of us. I lost approximately 100 tropical plants. I live in NE Mississippi. Even in the mildest winters, I have to bring in all my tropical plants, or at least the 100's I have room for. That's my problem. I have too many plants!

Yes, we have the makings of 300 plants this year, so what do we do? Grow 20 new seedlings! haha

HDR Stands for "High Dynamic Range" and the software allows you to combine multiple pictures together to make one. The problem with cameras...they do not take pictures the way we see things. If you take a picture of a bloom at high noon....the petals in the sun are usually over light, the background is dark, and there is no detail in the sky. So you take a picture where the sky is perfect, one where the flower is perfect...and the background is perfect..combine them together and everything is perfect!...by theory..lol...I've been playing with it for around a year now and I use it as a tool to create things like the pink, aged looking picture (3rd one above). I also use Photoshop to create moods trying to give more impact to the beauty of Plumeria's ..

Acorn is the currency being used in All Things Plants. You can earn them by uploading your photos in the correct plant database (Plumeria database for example), or sharing your ideas or adding new plant names in the database.

The microbadges are the little pictures you see just below the member names. This will let other members know what your interests are. For example, I have the plumeria, succulents, roses, and cactus as my interests. Then I submitted some ideas/gardening tips that were published and that's why I got the "bulb" microbadge.

...and by the way we love photos of plants here. So we would love to see photos of your plumeria collections when they are in blooms.

There are different forums in ATP depending on your interests. There is a coop section where you can trade or sell plants (I've never done it) or buy them. So if you want to trade your duplicate plumeria collections you can either post it here in the Plumeria forums or go to the coop. Our Plumeria moderator is Hetty.

You can also create a plant list to show what you have, want to sell or trade. I only use the plant list so I can remember what I have and to remember their names in addition to the physical plant tags on my actual plants.

Welcome to you from Austin, Terry! I also lost a few too many plants to the freezes this past winter. My plumerias have not bounced back. They are finally leafing out.

It is a good thing I live nowhere near Clear Lake, wherever that is.

I dug up my plumie from the yard 10 years ago after a hard Houston freeze . She is not all that happy in the pot. I know this because she hasn't bloomed since. But she is 6-7 feet tall so I am hopeful she will stop pouting and start blooming again. Then she will entice my other 6 potted plumies to bloom. That's the plan anyway. But at least they can have a warm winter in pots. LOVE you photos.

I love all your plumeria...I just discovered this beautiful plant. We are new to this state, came from the northwest coast a year ago and we are new to this site. I only have one so far but it's a start.
I hear you on that freeze, I lost so many of my plants. I got everything in pots in the garage and covered what I could in the ground but still lost lots of plants. I'm in Livingston so we got hit a little harder than you. I was just sick over it, I worked so hard acquiring plants just to lose them.
Well hope all your starts and seedlings do well for you, and no freezes this winter.
