this little guy showed up next to some peonies. I have no clue what it is???

It's an old, old type of bell flower...can't remember offhand exactly which one. I find it beautiful but Mom finds it invasive and tries to eradicate it :(

I had to actually declare a piece of my gardens off limits to Mom and DH...so I could have a few of those bell flowers and my milk weeds and oregano.

ps. Peach-leaved bell flower is extremely well behaved...I have them all over!

well I have no intention of pulling this one, just wanted to know for sure it wasnt going to try and take over...lol (yeah with one little stem) I hope it produces some seeds.

Looks like it may be Campanula rapunculoides, the creeping bellflower. Or possibly Adenophora Liliifolia, lady bells- I have trouble telling those 2 apart.'

It does resemble the second one alot... I guess there are a couple possibilities for it, which is fine.
I guess whatever transplanted that also transplanted what I thought was some sort of a milk weed or wacky dandelion. (that turned out to be Goats Beard I was told)

Some weeds are pretty, but all of mine are ugly.

I know that Adenophora spreads really fast, but not sure about the Campanula. It's a lovely plant, if it turns out to be aggressive where it's planted, it may be well suited to a spot with poor soil or difficult conditions. That's how I like to use those pretty plants that can be thugs, in areas where other things don't grow well.

Ditto on Campanula rapunculoides (creeping bellflower). It's a INTENSIVELY invasive ornamental in my garden. I've been fighting it for years. It has false roots so when you pull it, it leaves tuberlike roots deeper which spread AND it also propagates from a thousand fine seeds. Those of you familiar with creeping bellflower, do you know if the foliage is coarse or smooth? I used to have Adenophora in the garden, and I recall that the leaves were coarse, and kinda felt like sandpaper. In looking at pics of both plants, I can't tell them apart. Wondering if the leaf texture is telling?

I have C.isophylla (Italian bellflower) I think. It has slightly sandpapery leaves. It's a perennial thug in my zone, an indoor/outdoor plant in cold climates.

this one is only about a foot tall... Neal, I will go out tomorrow to feel the leaves. I do like it, & where its growing if it decides it wants to be a thug... I can handle that. lol

Sass, be careful what you wish for. Every one of the seeds will germinate, and they will get taller and spread beyond the area you have allotted for them. For one week, their blooms are lovely, then the rest of the year, that area will look weedy because nothing else will be left there.
They wilt in the heat but they won't die. They are definitely a plant for harsh climates like yours and mine, but newer cultivars will bloom longer and behave better. This is one of those plants that ends up on polls titled "what plant do you wish you had never planted?"
But, having said all that, i admit to growing snow on the mountain euphorbia and it's a pest to most people.

It's best use is in a wild garden or along a roadside. In Northeastern Vermont it's local name is "hedge bluebells" because of it's ubiquity in old gardens and along roads.

This was given to me last year and I finally got some orange flowers on it. The blooms are tiny and very dainty. Someone mentioned it grew by the beach.



The roots are starting to show above the soil and don't know if I should repot it and cover up those white roots.
