Celebrating the All Things Plants Database...with a contest!

By dave
January 31, 2015

Almost every feature of All Things Plants taps into the database in one way or another, and this week we are celebrating this aspect of ATP! Come in and read what activities we have planned for the week, and to learn about our contest with prizes offered by Victory Seed Company!

Over the past week, 115 different members submitted content to each of the areas that this contest covered. I am grateful to everyone who participated, especially those who did unusual activities that are not normal day to day activities, e.g. posting reviews in the Green Pages. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed the database this week, and a special thank you to @MikeD of Victory Seed Company for providing seeds to the winners!

The first place winner this week is @Joy!

The second place winner is @bamira

Third place was @p1mkw

If you're curious, here's how the top 10 members placed:

1) @Joy
2) @bamira
3) @p1mkw
4) @jmorth
5) @lovesblooms
6) @MikeD
7) @SRQHoyas
8) @Calif_Sue
9) @needrain
10) @plantladylin

Now, we had a slightly awkward situation here, because Victory Seed Co can't ship seeds to other countries, and @bamira is in the Czech Republic. I sent him a tree-mail and he very graciously told me that it's not a problem and to give the prize to the next one down. So third place will get the second place win. This is a hazard of running a contest on an international site like ATP: sometimes a winner can't claim a prize because of laws making it impossible to send prizes to them.

So thank you, bamira, for your kind understanding. I'm sending extra acorns your way to thank you.

Thank you, everyone, for a great week! I had a blast.

Thank you, @dave and @MikeD ... I'll certainly put the gift card to good use.

And, thank you, @bamira. That was very kind of you to pass the prize on down.

This was fun, and I agree with Stefan--I think the contest motivated me, but I wasn't really posting and such to win, I honestly needed to record a lot of things somewhere other than Notepad, and it brought back a lot of gardening memories as I thought of plants I've experienced, and I really like interacting with the members here so I enjoyed contributing overall.

Thanks, all!

It's odd to even be on the list! I've been working for some time to get many of my photos entered in the database. It seems I've grown quite a few that don't have any photo entries. The contest apparently just coincided with what I'd already begun. A few more days and I'll be finished (I hope). Originally I'd planned to get photos done, then comment on some plant entries. That was for the winter. Now things in my location are waking up, so I have no clue when I'll get around to doing any commenting.

Congratulations to everyone. The real winners will be folks that use the database.

@Joy has passed her prize down, as well! So I have some reshuffling to do. @p1mkw will get the bigger gift certificate and @jmorth will get the second one!

I guess I misunderstood Confused

This is one of the points laid out in the contest:
1) Proposing databox updates to plants that don't have yet any data details. Do you see a plant with absolutely no data details? Submit a data proposal including at least 5 data items. You can check off that it's an annual or perennial, wants sun or shade, blooms yellow, etc. 5 points per approved proposal.

I submitted 11 databox proposals I think. I was awarded the usual one point for each.

The "points" are not acorns but points applied to the contest. Whoever got the most points was the winner. Smiling Kind of like in a game, you count up your points at the end to see who wins. This is how we computed the winner of the week's contest.
