We have some hedges that we would like to cut back farther than our hedge trimmer is capable of doing because the branches have become too thick. We have been thinking of getting a chain saw for doing the job but yes, we've had our experiences with chainsaw blades and that's the only reason we hesitate. Looks like what we really need is a Sawzall.

A sawzall has become my go to gardening tool. I also use mine to section large root masses such as hosta. It sure beats hopping up and down on a shovel to section them!

Thanks for the tip on using finer cut blades less woody plants. It will help with cleaning up last year's day lily stalks.

From reading the spec sheets, the batteries need to cool off before they will start to recharge. I haven't left my sawzall outside, but I have left batteries in the fridge!

That's very true about charging hot batteries.

The other thing about the lithium batteries is that I understand that they absolutely hate a hard freeze/thaw cycle. Before the Rigid set, we had a Hitachi set and the batteries got wrecked the first winter because I left them in the garage to overwinter. So this winter, I was careful to put the batteries in the basement rather than leave them in the garage...and they're all working properly, thankfully.

That's good to know about the batteries. I don't leave batteries in the garage, because I charge them in the house - only ONE outlet in the garage

I love my house, but it surely does give me a list of things I would do differently if I ever decided to build my own (or if I win the lottery and get to remodel this one).

Actually, I just popped in to thank you for this tip. I got the cordless one right after your article ran, and both my yard helper and I have made good use of it. I can definitely see this being one of my go-to tools.
