A friend is trying to figure out what this plant is. I've attached photos.

That looks like a seedling from a nut tree. Possibly pecan or American chestnut.

The only other seedling I have seen that resembles your picture is Ailanthus, commonly called Tree of Heaven, a very invasive tree.

Where is this tree located? It looks like a Buckeye seedling.

Note the alternate arrangement of buds/leaves along the stem - cannot be an Aesculus sp.

Moon was on the right track. This is a nut tree, and in fact it's a Carya sp. - likely Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory) or Carya laciniosa (Shellbark Hickory).

Knowing where the plant is growing might help in the absolute ID. The OP should share that.

LOL, I thought it looked familiar. We used to have Pignut Hickories on the property at our old house.
