A good friend of mine from up there was wondering about the product "Bumper Crop" http://coastofmaine.com/produc... , which is advertised also good for mulching or side dressing rosebushes. I have no prior experience with that type of product, although I live thousands of miles away , if useful it will eventually reach us. Can some one help? Thank you

Hi Neal , have you used anyhthing of that kind with your roses or other plants?

Last year I tried a similar product from a local box store, more as a soil conditioner/amendment rather than mulch (but I think using as a top dressing is fine too). It was more costly than other kinds of compost they offered, and I can't say I really saw much difference from any other compost.

Neal ... you are starting with good soil before applying soil conditioner/ amendment ... is that true ? My soil in this garden is primarily subsoil which needs all the help I can give it. Do you think this product is worth the extra dollars ?

They are bringing it up here for the dang pot growers ! However, in a way that's good because we never used to be able to get anything up here. Most things have way too much peat in them which causes them to dry up like concrete in this hot and dry climate. In your experience, yes, I know you garden in a more humid climate, do you think it would help soil like mine ?

You're right Lyn, I'm starting with good soil but used the product I found in spots where I'd had flowering plants growing for several years and just wanted to amend before planting roses. While it seemed to do the job, I can't say it was any better than a lot of cheaper products.
