If you could choose only 1 Daylily, which one would it be? Thanks

Are you kidding me? ONE?!! ONLY ONE?!! Blinking

If I really really really absolutely positively could only have ONE (?!!) daylily, and (you didn't explicitly say, but presumably) it has to be a currently registered daylily (not a seedling), I'd be hard put to it to choose between 'Osterized' and 'December Wedding'. (If you asked this question a month or so ago, it would have been a three-way tie. Ask us again next year, and my answer may also vary... or it may not.)

Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

I have lots of daylilies that I love but as soon as I read your question I knew right away which one I'd pick. For me it would have to be Gold Helmet. Big, bright gold blooms that stand out and a heavenly fragrance. I can't ask for more.

Last year it would have been Roman Cohort. Received Panic In Detroit last fall and it bloomed this season. I was very impressed with the way that it stood out.

Even though I am partial to peachy pinks, Fooled Me has impressed me with its near-perfect blooms each year. It always opens nicely, I love the bloom size to scape height ratio, and it shows up great in the landscape. The clump has increased nicely and puts on a show for several weeks. It is not listed as a rebloomer, but I don't get a lot of that here anyway even on the ones that are listed that way.

A small discoloration on a perfect bloom.

I hope that day will never come if I have to choose ONLY ONE daylily! That will be a very sad day indeed! Can't do it! Having said that, my number one daylily this year is Jolly Good Yellow because it just blooms and blooms and then reblooms.

Here is a pic of it taken today at 5PM. Still looking good at this time of the day. Did not get to see it this morning (was at work) but it probably looked just as good then.

This is one of the cultivars that the crows destroyed; they ate/scratched/plucked it down to the ground Grumbling I moved it to my front sidewalk bed and it is recovering nicely, thank goodness!

Still thinking about what my 'one' would be...

Blue 23, if you like Fooled Me, I have a seedling that will persuade you to change your mind. I composted mine!
I also agree with edible, Undefinable would be very nice.

I just added 'Jolly Good Yellow' to my Want List, sounds like my type of plant.
Now to choose just one....well, I just can't decide on one and I have new ones on the way so even if I did choose just one it might change pretty quickly! But I do like ones with large bright blooms that show up from across the garden, have scads of blooms, multiply at a decent pace and have a long blooming season and are very rust resistant! I have a few that almost fill all those criteria, but none of them quite meet the large bloom criteria while having all the other traits, when I find one that has seven or eight inch blooms and all those other listed traits, that will be my one favorite daylily!

Hi Seedfork. The great thing about growing your own seedlings is that you can get plants that you can't find elsewhere. You might try using White Eyes Pink Dragon or Gullivers Travels with your
rust-free evergreens to get those extra large blooms. I am having great blooms, but we don't have a lot of rust here. Maybe a plant or two this time of year. This is a secret, so don't tell anyone!
I can honestly say that I had a garden this year that you would like. No way I could choose a favorite, but the orchid/amethyst color is captivating from a distance. For a dormant plant, you can
cross either of these two with Swallow Tail Kite for some extra large pinks and orchids. With White Eyes, you might get some unusual forms, but you will like them.

Deryll, r
I don't do any hybridizing to speak of, it is true that I might come up with a plant I like, but with so many people already doing that and involving thousands and thousands of seedlings over periods of years, I am more content at the moment, to just take advantage of all those years of trial and error others have already been though.

Welcome! Deryll!

Larry, if you like red daylilies you may want to get Thin Man. It makes me stop in my tracks! The blooms are huge!

So sorry to hear about that, Regina! Though i am glad that you were able to save it before it got worse. Maybe it may send up a scape as your weather is still warm for awhile yet.

It'd have to be a yellow, just because of all the good things that they do so well; opening, sun-fastness, bright color noticeable from down the street.

Seedfork, I understand completely! Myself, I find hybridizing rewarding, and a dream comes to life, but I still browse those catalogs! Life is great, daylily speaking.

Fooled Me throws very nice seedlings. I have twin FFOs on a rebloom scape of Foolish Dragon this morning, and it's a stunner.

I'd love to see a picture of your seedling, maybe it would fit best in the 'Seedlings for August' thread;
