A friend asked me to come look at her plant. She has one that has found it's true home and has obviously been hers for about 5 years. Bless her heart, she has been taking all leaves off the bottom of the plant as well as anything on the stalk except the main leaves, ....so what she now has is a plant with one stalk, beautiful healthy leaves all the way up, the bracts are about 5/6 in apart for the first the 3 ft then they start closing and the last 2/3 winding up 1/2 apart with healthy green leaves. Needless to say the plant is top heavy and bending accordingly. She actually has 6 of them in a pot in a 3/3 row. Now I know what should be done and would love to have a couple of new schefflera myself but she really doesn't want me to start cutting up her beautiful plant.......any suggestions???

Hi jasss76! Welcome! Given the right climate and time they are trees. Is that her goal to keep pruning them into trees? She just needs to support the trunk eventually it will support everything. It would be better if each one had its own pot.

I don't know if you will convince her to cut her plants, lol. Indoors, I don' t think the trunks are going to get much stronger. People can get funny ideas about what a plant can look like and they still think it's "healthy." and good.
I feel sure you could cut them into chunks with a few nodes each and make lots of new plants, but she'd be horrified at the carnage!
I had two goofy ones from work. One I cut all three tops off and stuck them together for a thick pot to root, And then there's a nice bases which I repotted and will grow into a faux bonsai look if any luck. Cuttings look very happy and never even wilted, the base is just starting to show a tiny bit of green.
Plant it and they will come.

One has to have a goal in mind to start any course of action. If your friend likes the way the plant looks, then there's no action needed. Does your friend wish to alter the plant(s)?

Scheffleras are not hard to find at WM, L's, HD, or anywhere else that sells plants. They might not have one the first time you stop by, but they are a staple plant of any place that sells potted houseplants.
