I have never had a problem with Japanese Maple roots. My bigger concern would be the size of the tree and the closeness of the wall. If you are growing one of the medium maples (10 feet x 10 feet), your tree will be crowded. If you are growing a standard size tree (30 feet tall and wide), that is way too small a space.

Chiron,

What is the cultivar in question here? I will be able to help more with the answer. Also, keep in mind JMs don't like wet feet. Make sure the downspouts aren't close to the tree.
