Would it be possible to add more selections to the menu of awards and recognitions listed for plant database entries? I am thinking about American Garden Rose Selections (AGRS) and other rose awards related to sustainable rose (chemical-free) rose gardening (e.g., awards associated with the Baltimore trials), but adding awards for other plants to the menu would be desirable too.

There might be quite a few different awards, but having them listed alphabetically on the menu would make them searchable, an advantage over free-text entries. It might be desirable to make some of the menu choices context-sensitive (e.g., awards specific for roses or daylilies, etc.).

For roses, we already have Earth-Kind Rose, AARS and RHS in the drop-down menu, including a space to enter the year of the award. Other awards have been listed in the "other" field. As always, this is more a problem of finding people willing to add the awards to the entries. Only 3 or 4 people have added these awards to entries in the Rose Database.

I will be glad to enter rose awards as time allows. I am just learning about roses and would value the experience.

I have read that AARS awards are no longer given, and American Garden Rose Selections are meant to replace them:

Would you be willing to add a menu choice for the Biltmore Trials with a box for free text to specify the particular award? There are so many and they have such long names. Here is an example:

Do you mean Baltimore or Biltmore? Biltmore only began the awards in 2015, and only 8 roses have received the awards to date, so it would be easy to enter them by hand in the "other" field (ex: Biltmore 2015). I don't know that this small quantity of entries warrants an addition to the drop-down menu, but that's something for @dave to decide. As for AGRS, it looks as though only 9 roses have received this award to date, and most of them are regional awards and don't apply to the rose in all regions.

I meant Biltmore and have edited my post. Thanks for catching my error.

I will wait for @dave to decide before adding AGRS and Biltmore awards.

How about ADR-award roses?

ADR is a different story and definitely deserves a checkbox. These German awards go back a long way (to 1950, I think).

I really don't see a reason not to include a checkbox for any award, unless it's an award that is really just not recognized by anybody at all. There's no harm because they only show up in the proposal area as checkboxes, and in the main plant's page it doesn't show unless the award is checked off. (Meaning it's only visible to those plants that have received the award.)

So, knowing that this is my position, please let me know what awards you want added, and I'll make it happen!

Thank you, Dave and Zuzu!

The ADR should have a field for the year awarded.

So all three will have a pulldown field when the user checks the box.

(And BTW it's not Zulu, it's Zuzu Smiling )

Please forgive me, Zuzu. I am beginning to see that my typo problems (Biltmore/Baltimore and Zuzu/Zulu) were caused by my iPad's over-exuberant, out-of-control auto-editing feature, followed by my poor/non-existent proof-reading.

I went to add these 3 to the Awards checkboxes but it looks like we don't have that at all for roses right now. Am I wrong and just not seeing it?

Never mind that, I see that the Earth-Kind is under the main awards that covers all plants.

In this case, I suggest we add a roses-specific field for awards and populate it with Earth-Kind and the three mentioned above.

Yes, that sounds good to me. We used to have the awards listed in the rose-specific portion of the entries, but that information was moved when the awards field was added to the general section.

These are all handled.

I added ADR, Biltmore, and AGRS.

Then I moved over from the Primary details into Roses the Earth-Kind and AARS.

Dave, you didn't move the data. All of the Earth-Kind roses and all of the AARS roses back to the late 1930s had been entered. Now "Search" says we have none of those.

Hmm, actually, I did move everything over. In fact, I took Earth-Kind and literally moved it from Primary Plant Details over to Roses. The checkboxes themselves remained intact.

I'll do some tests and see if I can replicate this.
