Paul, I have to scratch around for the label later so I can tell you which cross, but wow! The camera exaggerates it a bit, I think, but not much - it's not pink, it's not orange, it's not brown... it really is red! Thanks for the chance to grow such an amazing lily!

A great New Year starter. I run out of adjectives for these lily specimens. Maybe I'm better off saying I'm drooling right now.

Congratulations! The color red is hard to obtain with Div. VI. Sometimes I think it's more accidental than intentional but when it appears, it's always the biggest, most surprising event of the year. Now, you just got to hope and pray its a healthy strong grower. Test crosses with this one and other different medium to dark purples should produce some even darker 'reds'. Also, based on my limited experience with Div.VI red is that it develops a darker, deeper red when grown in full sun all day and a brighter, clean red when grown in more shady locations Acorn Thumbs up Crossing Fingers! s.

Did that one need a health warning attached, Connie? Sticking tongue out

Thanks everyone, happy to share the happies, and all breeding credit goes to Paul.

Thanks for the good info, Lorn. Because I haven't grown many trumpets before my pollen-daubing opportunities are rather limited this year - a couple of stems were strong with 4 and 5 buds this their first year, but most only have a single bloom, or two... so far the reddest three are single bud stems. I might be pushing my luck to try setting pods on those!

But Paul, I could send pollen of this red one back to you to use on your more established reds. Crossing Fingers!

Nice ones Anthony! I was hoping that seedling would have a bit of Parasol's freckling in there.

G'day Della, will you have any of the red seedlings to enter in the Claremont show in 2 weeks?
If you like, you can send a bit of the best red pollen and I'll put it onto both parents and/or others and send you the seeds, or keep it for yourself for next year. You could also ask Doug for a bulb of Joy Hawley and use your stored pollen on it next season.Brian and Doug have the same gene pool as me, do you know if they have bred for reds?

GEEZ, Lorn, let me assure you that the reds that I have produced have not come about by accident. Some of us have a well thought out breeding program. Angry

I said:Della, you seem to be picking just the right parents!

- Please forgive me, Paul, for forgetting that YOU are the breeder.

More of Paul's work:

Garden bed #57. An intense orange. Like most of the solid orange ones, though, its stem needs work.

Garden bed #62. The third small trumpet. Haven't noticed a scent yet, but expect that it will probably start to appear tomorrow.
