How do you add image to data base to existing plants? Or can you? I would like to add some seedling images to a few already existing plants. Most pictures in the data base are of the mature plant, not what it looks like in the beginning. Thank you for any help with this๐Ÿ˜

You certainly can, add by clicking option in said plant's database page. Add pic and choose from list like winter interest, seedling, new growth...
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

You'll need to scroll down to the bottom part of the database entry for the plant you want to add photos of. If there are lots of photos, it may take a bit of scrolling to get there. Smiling Click on the "Upload a photo" under Adding Actions and it should be self-explanatory from there.

You don't need to scroll all the way down, it's also on the left side.

Excellent! I like it when an entry has pics of every possible part and stage of a plant. Thanks for sharing!

Sorry, but I'm still a little confused. I want to add an orchid that is not listed in the data base along with one of my pictures of it. All I see is "Add a new plant to the data base". I did that and submited it but I think I did it wrong.

Hi Susan,

You did click the right link and yes, you need to propose the addition of the plant to the database before you can upload photos of it. I'm the admin that generally handles Orchids, so if you ever need assistance with Orchids in the database, please let me know. Orchids have a non-standard naming convention that the database wasn't originally built to handle, so most people don't quite get it right when proposing the addition of Orchids to the database.

The addition you proposed has now been registered (the link you gave only showed the cross) and I've added the new hybrid name as well as approved the addition to the database:

Orchid (Miltonia Juicy Fruit 'Mexico')

Thank you or approving this to the database @Australis! I see now how this works. I was surprised though to see Juicy Fruit which is not on the tag. The tag just includes the cross and 'Mexico'. Is the cultivar Juicy Fruit or Mexico? That has always confuses me. I wonder why the tag did not include that? I need to update my spreadsheet! Smiling

You're welcome, Susan.

This is where Orchid naming is a bit more complicated than most plants. Orchid names have two parts - the grex (or cross name) and the clonal (also known as varietal or seedling) name.

In the case of Miltona Juicy Fruit 'Mexico', Miltonia is the genus, Juicy Fruit is the grex and 'Mexico' is the clonal name. Juicy Fruit is the name given to the cross - so any plant that is made from crossing Binotii and Matto Grosso (in either direction) gets this name. 'Mexico', being the clonal/seedling name, is specific to that particular plant. When Orchids are tissue-cultured (cloned) for mass production, you get lots of copies of the same plant (hence why this name is often called the clonal name).

The clonal name is the nearest equivalent to the cultivar name for most other plants, but you cannot call the Orchid just by the clonal name. A clonal name can be reused as long as the grex (cross) name is different. Orchid nurseries often do this - they will register a whole bunch of different hybrid crosses, but give the best plant from each cross the same clonal name (typically the name of the nursery so that you know that clone originated from them).

Often you will find Orchids, especially seedlings, are sold before the cross is registered. Hence why your plant was labelled as (Binotii X Matto Grosso) 'Mexico'.

Hopefully I haven't confused you too much!

@Australis you've helped me a lot! I have a number of orchids that are not in the data base that I want to list as "have" and also add some photos. So, if I goof up submitting them I know you'll catch it. This has been very enlightening tonight. Thank you again. Thank You!
