It must require some chill time. I bought one years ago, and planted it in my flower bed after it finished blooming. It came up every year for about 6 years, but never bloomed again.

I had one in Oakdale (zone 8). One.... It filled up an entire garden by the time I moved a few years ago.

You once again remind me of the plants I left behind that wouldn't even have a chance here in Zone 6. Sad

But then I remember all the cool plants I couldn't grow there that are now a part of my garden. Lovey dubby

I think I should go cuddle with my dog now.

Good night.

I noticed that it is poisonous, does that mean it should not be planted by people who have young kids or dogs?

Only if you have children and pets that tend to taste your plants.

A child that young that sticks everything in it's mouth is never left unsupervised anyway, or at least shouldn't be. I have never heard of dogs eating anything other than grass. But i'm not a vet, i guess some dogs do.

When I sold my home in San Jose 6 years ago, it was full of potentially toxic or poisonous plants, oleander, brugmansia, etc. I raised my children and grandchildren there, had numerous pets over the years, not one, child or pet, ever ate a thing in the garden. The new owners, a non-gardening couple with their first baby, proceeded to tear out all kinds of wonderful mature plants, because grandma said they were poisonous. As a first child, I doubt they would ever let him unsupervised so to me, it was unnecessary. But to each their own I guess, for their own piece of mind.

I'm in Florida where many plants are toxic to cats and dogs and we have 2 Golden Retrievers who tend to eat anything and everything they can get their mouths on! They graze on the lawn to the point that we sometimes call them "Goatdogs" but I really have to watch them like a hawk whenever they are outside because they tend to want to eat everything, from wood mulch to shrubs and trees and it's not that they are lacking anything in their diet. We have Ixora shrubs outside the fence and Tree Philodendrons inside and outside the fenced area; both are highly toxic so I have to trim the Ixora away from the fence and I keep an eye on the dogs around the tree Philo's. I've found our crazy canines yanking bark and fronds from the Saw Palmettos which have very sharp leaf blades and yesterday one was yanking a Staghorn Fern off the base of a palm tree and chewing on the leaves but thankfully the Staghorn is not toxic to cats or dogs.

Wow Lin, guess I am grateful I don't have to watch my two little dogs on our half acre, we would have to leash them for each potty break but it is a needed caution for pet owners.

Sue, I've had many dogs in my lifetime but none were as fanatical about eating plants, trees, leaves, wood .... as these golden retrievers who own us! Our old vet had a golden and he told us it was just a trait with this particular breed of dog; that they like to experience everything with their mouths. My youngest sister has raised four or five golden retrievers over the years but I don't recall her ever having the issues of her dogs eating stuff. She lives in South Carolina though so maybe plants don't taste the same up there. Rolling on the floor laughing

Sue, yes they are nosy! I don't allow them in the kitchen while I'm cooking; I tell them "Out" and they lay right by the kitchen door watching me.

@Calif_Sue, *Blush* I didn't mean to hijack this thread; can my last few posts about my dogs be deleted so as to keep the thread on track?

No please, I love it! I hope Ricardo doesn't mind. It's a progression of a thread that often happens and it still applies, a small slight veer to the left is harmless. nodding
