I'm trying to add some new cultivars to the Hippeastrum database. It keeps blocking me with the URL. I'm adding a website in that space for verification. What exactly is a URL and where do I get it? I'm trying to add Gold Metal, Olaf, Dynasty, Princesse Claire, Striped Amadeus, Tres Belles, Mystica, Terra Mystica, Golden Daylight, and Torrone. Every thing but Olaf and Gold Metal are from Royal Colors.

The new plant proposal area requires a URL to be present in the notes.

A URL is a web address to another website.

The idea is that if a plant needs to be added to our database, then it must already exist somewhere else on the internet. So you would add a note to the proposal area giving a link to another web page that verifies that the plant is real and actually exists.

We added this because we get such a huge number of proposals for new plants that simply don't exist. So the admins decided it was best to require proof of a new plant's existence before allowing it to be proposed for inclusion in the database.

New to me, and good to know. I usually just go by the nursery tag, likely won't do a lot of web searching since I really am unclear what sites are reliable or not. Hard enough to figure out whether news is real or not, let alone plants! At some point, I just throw up my arms.

Looks like it worked just fine, I just went through and approved your proposals.

I'm not crazy about this feature, frankly. I deal mostly with people submitting Plumeria rubra cultivars and it is a well-known fact that if it is a seedling, people can name it themselves. That (new) plant would not exist anywhere on any website so I would then have to deny adding this plant?

We should not be accepting cultivars that are not available to commerce or registered in some way. Fact is, if we start accepting submissions like those what is to stop a big 'plant company' from coming along and selling something else with the same name? What if 'big company' trademarks the name? Who's submission is correct?

Fact also is, cultivars created by people and named that are never sold are not only not existing anywhere on any website....they are not existing anywhere in the world but 'MR./MRS. Landowners' back yard.

I'd agree. It's probably best if cultivars listed in the database are either "in commerce" or registered with the appropriate plant society.

I agree. Please remember that naming a plant that you've created does not make it a cultivar.

It's a garden name.
