I have yet to plant any package seeds that produce more than a 2" plant. This year I would like to plant Pumpkins and Squash. Are there any recommendations for type of Seeds? timing to plant? I live out in

Where do you live? What are you trying to grow? Is it appropriate for your particular climate?

@rzabriskie -- you can just direct-seed pumpkins and squash after the last frost, or you can start them indoors several weeks before the last frost and then transplant them. It would be helpful to know where you actually live Smiling

Here is a link here that can help. Just enter your zipcode and it will give you some good scheduling for planting seeds inside and out.

I start my plants from seed for later transplanting into the garden. In the past, I have started with small containers and as the plants grow I will transplant to large containers but would it make any difference if I can begin the seeds in large containers to begin with?

For tomatoes, It helps that you transplant them deeper at least once before planting them outside. They grow roots along the buried stem. Ideally, you want at least 8" of rooting stem buried outside.

I like tall shallow pots for that.

My two favorite go-to seed shops are Totally Tomatoes

https://www.totallytomato.com

And Kitazawa Seeds

http://www.kitazawaseed.com

Mr. Kitazawa started in business after a stint at my grandfather's nursery in Oakland CA. That was back in the 1920's. Smiling

But if your plants never get taller than 2 inches, there is still a problem. Are you choosing to grow veggies with too long a growing season for your area? Do they bolt at 2 inches?

Don't forget bakerceek (rareseeds.com) they have a great selection of pumpkin and squash seeds and other seeds too! You can also check the green pages here on NGA's site and see if you can get an SASE with someone who may have something you're looking for. Also check your local grocery store! I purchased some gorgeous butternut squashes not too long ago and they had loads of seeds in them. I also purchased apples and saved the seeds from those as well. My apple seed has grown into a beautiful plant and is about 5 inches tall now Lovey dubby

like Daisy said, at two inches, there's something else wrong and the source of the seed doesn't matter.
Damp off? Drowning? Bad soil?
Plant it and they will come.

Just to clarify -- the Green Pages are for positive reviews of seed companies, nurseries, etc.; requests for seeds/plants can be posted on the "plant and seed trading" forum, though. And seed swaps are a great way to get seeds, too!

Ok 😁 hi : Richard 😁
Mass. Aye ! A short growing season ! Right ??? You'll want some fast producing veges. There are many developed for short seasons. Early Girl tomatoes are developed to produce. Set tomatoes in cooler weather than most. There may be newer varities. Check seed catalogs or nursury.
Its ? im guessing. Probably time for you to get your seeds started under some lite/s. No time to wait for seed orders ? Shrug! ???
Yellow straight neck and zucchini squash like 55 60 days. Bush beans 55 days. Theres corn that only grow like 4 foot high that produce quick. Turnips are fast. Radishes 25 days POW ### .. kohlrabi # you got to try 😁. The last three. Direct seed when ground can be worked. Frost dont bother them.
Good luck Richard !!!
Now !!!!
Go do your homework !!!😁!!! Rolling on the floor laughing !!!
Perrty Please , with sugar on top !!!

We have a short growing season here as well. I always start my tomatoes indoors. Mine are about 4 inches tall right now. And Early Girl are a very nice variety that I've had good luck with. Also cherry tomatoes produce before the larger tomatoes (I like "Sweetie" myself). I haven't had really good luck with starting squash indoors, but that might be because I have a tendency to start things too early and they get too big to handle being handled by the time I can set them out. Rolling my eyes.

But as others have said, your seeds only growing to about 2 inches is an indication that something is wrong, either with the location you're choosing (not enough light?) or soil issues.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

It seems to, but I admit I can't figure out why not. Maybe it is just a matter of shelf space and lighting. It might just be soil pot efficiency; Shrug!

My daughter plants her tomato seeds in 16 oz plastic cups (she burns holes in the bottom with a hot nail). She puts about an inch of soil at the bottom of the cup, plants her seeds and fills the cups as the plants grow. It seems to work.

I have an appointment with spring!
So glad I did not pre germinate peas for planting outside yet...it is mid March and the deep freeze of January has just arrived, following the warmest February in many years. And we are expecting a major snowstorm this week...AAHHHHHH!!!!! Grumbling
