Hello, I love my 3 clematis but would love to find some less common ones. Where is a good place to purchase them? Thanks!

Thank you, Sue. Have you ever tried air layering?

Air layering is impossible and layering on the good earth is not reliable for me.

I received the two clem's from Brushwood and was quite impressed.

I have had several requests for starts of the one above. I have heard of pulling a piece down and into a pot and letting it start at the joint before cutting it away from the mother plant.

I lost a white noid clematis after years of having it. Yesterday I found a Miss. Bateman at a local nursery and I had to have it at $8.99!

I have been researching how to propagate clems. I might give it a try.

How is it not reliable for you? You mean they simply don't root? or they die later? takes too long?

Layering on the earth works for some clem's not others. I've tried repeatedly with Omoshiro without any luck but Liberation is ready to move in less than six months and the layerings have great roots. It also works very well with Princess Diana.

Edited to make a correction: It worked well on Duchess of Albany, not Princess Diana. Sorry!

I wonder if placing a couple pots near the base of the plant would work. You could cover a low stem/joint with dirt and hope for the best. Hurray!

A friend does it that way. Keep the pots constantly moist.

Good info, I am going to try it. I have nothing to lose, plus I love a challenge! Could you ask if they use a rooting compound?

It wouldn't hurt to use one at least.

Shrug!

I had never thought of doing it in a pot, might try that. I have tried to root honeysuckle by using a rock straight on the ground. Sometimes works, others not, the moles like to get in there and then too much loose soil/air.
