Blooming on the neighbors side of my moms fence, nice fragrance, upright growth, it's about 6 ft tall. It looks so familiar. Shrug!

Well, fragrance is relative I think, it wasn't something I detected standing next to it, I had to put my nose in it, it was a sweet smell.

Thanks Julie. I have some huge trees that I was told were privets, lots of seedlings have to be pulled out all the time. Previous owner let several grow over 6 feet and they look different from this one so I should try to get some pictures of it too to narrow down the species.

Sorry to be Ms Bummer here, but I do have to point out that privets are considered invasive. They are lovely and I'm glad I didn't plant one (or more) when I was totally ignorant about things like natives and invasives, etc. At least now I am happy to say that I'm only partially ignorant.

I have to admit to being puzzled by local nurseries that cater to peeps like me who are shopping for native perennials but still stock at least a few plants that are known invasives.

Happy that you have an ID. Hurray!
I guess smell/odor/aroma is relative. To me, privet....stinks...a really sweet stinky smell. It is also the smell I most remember from my early childhood as we had a huge privet just outside the kitchen door and the 'aroma' permeated the house.
