If I have a question about something like sages, for example, since I know that there's a forum dedicated to sages/salvias, should I post my question there or is it better to post it in the Ask a Question forum? Or does it matter?

I would say that if there is a forum dedicated to the topic in question, then you should post in that forum. I think the Ask a Question Forum would be best for those questions that are more generic and you can't find a better home for. If in doubt you can use the Ask a Question Forum for just about anything, it may even get moved for you, if someone think it would be better placed elsewhere.

@Horntoad - thanks. That was what I've been inclined to think, but I never really knew. Just makes sense to me.

@Sugarweed, rather than attach you ID question to someone's else thread which is unrelated to her question, please repost in the Plant ID Forum. Once on that forum, scroll to the bottom to start your own new thread.
