i have had Podophyllums for approx 15 years and have not really wanted to hybridize them even tho most of the ones i have are hybrids. i have P. delavayi a specie plus the synonym Veitchii which actually acts & looks a little different & P. spotty dotty a hybrid & P. kaledoscope a hybrid which all look sorta similar
and i decided to cross them this year even tho this is the first year delavayi did not flower i think because i moved it and it is still recovering. P. delavayi flowers at the y junction of the 2 stems
Thumb of 2017-07-29/Strever/d8e62b

P. kaleidoscope flowers at the junction of one of the leaves
Thumb of 2017-07-29/Strever/7a922d

P. spotty dotty flowers approx 2/3 of the way up one of the stems
Thumb of 2017-07-29/Strever/59769f

i crossed spotty dotty & kaleidoscope and half (approx 5) of the spotty dottys grew an extra stem at the flower junction after pollination making it look like delavayi its mother plant
Thumb of 2017-07-29/Strever/554421

i have never heard of this and searching can not find anything about it
the brits have been hybridizing Podophyllums for more then a decade and i have also ask them if they are familiar with this trait of spotty dotty, and they said "never had seen it"
has someone here seen this ?

Sorry I have no information for you but the guy up at keeping it green nursery is doing some amazing work with these plants. You might E-mail him see if he will share any info. The open days at the nursery is finished after the end of June so he might have time to respond. Dan Hinkley is another you might try E-mailing, might get a response.

Well drat about the seedling loss. This sounds good for next year with more and stronger seeds.Did the seedling wither away? get eaten by bugs? Died of smoke inhalation from the fires? Stolen by tiny Martians to be used as a tent?

as i said i have more large seed pods this year
so i decided to take picts this time
here is a Kaleidoscope seed pod that was pollinated with spotty dotty
Thumb of 2018-10-09/Strever/aff6d8
and the seed are in a goop that is really difficult to remove
Thumb of 2018-10-09/Strever/7dd8d8
but after a few minutes work 6 more seed of the Kaleidoscope/SpottyDotty
Thumb of 2018-10-09/Strever/4c8816
then i got a cpl of the Spotty Dotty seed pods pollinated with Kaleidoscope
as you can see the goop around the seed is not so gooey
Thumb of 2018-10-09/Strever/baf104
Thumb of 2018-10-09/Strever/2acab8

Do you think you could upload the pod/fruit and seed photos to the Podophyllum entry in the Plant Database?
