This Crinum is very special to me. I received my start from a friend years ago. Her Dad had grown it when she was young and she is now in her early seventies. Her Dad called it a milk and wine lily but it is not the same one we now know by that name.

Unlike the other Crinums, this one blooms in August and has just opened up. It is fragrant and smells wonderful.

This was just opening last night.

The blooms are in clusters of four. These are photos of the plant itself.





If there is no ID to be had, I am o.k. with it. This is a plant I love...

No ID from me, but I have to say it is gorgeous!

But wait! I might have a good resource. Could take a few days to get in touch but will try. This guy knows a lot of bulbs. Hunts them down.

Rats! Thought I had it but failed to see the slight pink tinge. I was looking at Crinum Jagus. Try southernbulbs.com

I have been lusting after some of the beautys when I start looking for an ID. I had no idea there was such a variety.

That is a very pretty Crinum, is yours fragrant?

The posture of those blooms is different on the one I have. Yours are draping and shaped like a trumpet. The blooms on this one are more open like a lily. I'm thinking it is still a different one.

My friend came by today and looked at it again. We calculated that she gave it to me over 35 years ago. She also remembered her Grandmother growing it.

The closest Crinum I have found was on the Jenks site. It was Crinum x Sugar Cookie. https://jenksfarmer.com/produc... Their description says blooms in September and the blooms have more shading of pink in them. Closer but no cigar...

It's not 'Milk and Wine'. I actually know that one, at least by it's common name. I think that the pink in the Milk and Wine is much darker than that of Pod's. (Maybe not so much in the picture but in the ones I've known.)

Sometime within the last year I lost my crinums (mother and babies) during days and days of rain. They were in a huge clay pot on a side of the house that I rarely walk by. When I finally did, I reached into the pot, icky as it was, and all 3 bulbs had turned to mush. But the plant lives on in Florida and OKC. I got the mother bulb from someone at a DG swap. Think she lived in the Houston area. So anyway, I have another large clay planter that maybe has a crinum in it. I don't remember. (Dang it. Spellcheck just turned 'crinum' into 'cranium'. I hate that.) Has large strappy leaves, except for when a katydid nibbled on it.


My crinum(s) were/are Ellen Bosanquet. I have some pictures of one of the bulbs, a flower bud, and the plant in a clay pot. They're in the Plants Database. Hmm. Maybe it's the same one that the katydid did. Or else it's an amaryllis but doubt it. Hmm. Now it's wait and see. And move it to where it will get more light.

That is a beautiful one! And yes, it does resemble this one a lot. In fact, it looks very much like that Crinum x Sugar Cookie that I linked earlier.

Mine has always bloomed a far more delicate pink color. Folks think it is white till you get right up in its' face.

This may be hard to ID as I understand these can cross with other Crinums in bloom at the same time. Unless there is a DNA test for Crinums I may never know...
I love these guys! There are so many different ones. I only have four different ones and all have been what are called passalong plants... shared by other gardeners.

I'm not that smart but have learned a bit from reading thru their Crinum descriptions. For example some prefer wet feet but others want to be high and dry.

Also the different ones had different bloom times which I had figured out while watching my meager collection. And the bloom time is one of the things I was fascinated with this unknown Crinum because it is always in August and not a common time for blooms on these.

I recently dug up the few Ellen Bosanquet Crinums that I have. Or at least I think that is what they are. Those bulbs are huge. I needed to relocate them to another bed.

Talk about plants that thrive on neglect!
I live in zone 7b and it's usually dry. Chillicothe, TX
Crinum are expensive and slow glowers, but SURVIVORS.
I have about 6 varieties now ranging from pure white to dark pink and one with stripes.
I recommend Jenks Farmer. That's where I purchased my crinum. I watch their specials!

Dangerous, isn't it? Yes, I like the Jenks site. Thanks for the heads up on the specials.

My milk and wine has been almost white before and one year the stripe was very very dark but like I said it was sold as Milk and Wine and it is very fragrant
I have had so many tags stolen by my furbabies, I don't know the name of most of mine but they are so pretty, I don't need a name

I agree wholeheartedly but I occasionally go on a quest to ID this Crinum. It revives my passion for these durable bloomers and you meet the nicest folks when we talk about Crinums.

There are so many flowers in all categories that look so similar, it's very difficult
