I love the anticipation of tomato season. I prepared my bed last fall adding Bumper Crop, Leaves, and a good sprinkling of a well balanced fertilizer. My Son worked the bed over with a shovel some time ago . What am I going to grow? Favorites from the past that will be returning are SunSugar, Sweet 100, Black Krim, Beef Master, Kellogg's Breakfast, Goliath, Delicious, and Jet Star. First timers for me are Black Cherry, Chocolate Sprinkles, German Queen, Chef's Orange, Raspberry Lyanna and Pink Brandywine and anything else that tempts me. If I see something that looks interesting at the nursery or box stores I check it out on the computer before buying. Room is getting to be a problem. I always crowd things and am running out of cages.

I like Sweet 100 and Daniela tomatoes. Have tried Sungold which are good but can be confusing because they look like 1/2 ripened Sweet 100....

Does anyone know what this is on my tomato plant?

This looks like herbicide drift has gotten to the end leaves.

Oh I always have a mix of returning favorites and some new to try. Some years more new stu8ff than others.

Im not vey good at tomatoes, but now that im retired im hoping to be able to pay more attention to them. Have a couple of cherry tomato plants, but cant remember the variety. Returning are 3 german queens and new are 3 arkansas travelers.

This thread makes me realize how badly I have failed in my vow to refrain from trying so many new varieties when I have over 200 varieties of seeds from favorites in my inventory.

There are only eight varieties grown previously in this year's line up. There are as many new 'blacks' this year as I could fit in. That is the reason (excuse) for so many new to me varieties. An experiment gone completely wrong. Next year back to mostly old favorites and fewer plants...HA HA HA, says my wife.

As tempted as I am to always try something new, I am planting a few favorites this year, as well as some new ones.

@PaulF--I'm intrigued by all of your black tomatoes. I'm still on the lookout for one that will do well in my garden. Most of the popular purple tomatoes that I've tried just don't seem to do well (Black from Tula, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim....)

Always in search of the ultimate southern tomato. I want one that will deliver in our heat and humidity and last the summer.

Sampling three new varieties this year, Dixie Red, Bella Rosa and Creole. for one that will do well. I will then try it again next summer to ensure that it wasn't a fluke.

Researching and shopping for the seeds, then starting them and watching them grow out is almost as fun as eating them.

Went to CSUF hear in Fresno yesterday for there drought tolerant give and take plant day.
I got a new tomato plant variety.
It's suppose to do good in heat of our valley, we usually have days on end of 100+ heat waves, in summer months, with lows in the cool 70s.
Then !!! Dog-gone-it When, sister and I got home, neither one of us could remember the name, except that the name had, FIRE in it.
Fire engine, fire house, fire cracker, or ??? Fire ??? !!!
Tried a Google search, with no results.😟
Maybe my sister will have better success.

Ditto Rita..........I plant way more than I can possibly eat. I love trying new to me things. Just planted a Black Cherry. If my Wife were still living she would make Chili Sauce. I love to have plenty to give to neighbors who love them.

I went to the nursery a little while ago and found a plants of Dr. Wyches, a yellow. Good reviews when I google it's name. I should have also mentioned that my family loves to make fresh salsa so they can use a lot of the tomatoes. I can take it or leave it with salsa.

For yellows this year I have the usual Sungolds.

I also have a early very tasteless bland tomato called Taxi. I know it is tasteless and bland because I had it year before last.

Then I have Azoychka and the new to me Golden Queen USDA Strain. Also have the small yellow tomatoes called Golden Tiger and some orangey yellow one called Orange Zinger. The Zingers are larger cherry tomato types.

I like them both and I grew both last year. This year only had seeds of Sungold and don't want to order more seed.

Honestly they both taste the same to me.

A cold front with rain is moving through Utah today and tomorrow. I worried all day yesterday about night time temps but it is 45 this morning and forecast for tomorrow night is mid-40's and then a warm up. Tradition here is to plant tomatoes after Mother's Day but it has been such nice weather wise that I have had some tomatoes planted out for a couple of weeks. I've mentioned this before but space is becoming a problem as are lack of the kind of cages that I like. I can't find any concrete re-enforcing wire except a big roll for $150. I clearly don't need that much. I saw a sign yesterday that someone in my area had raised 19 varieties in gallon cans and are selling them today. I better show some restraint and not even go look......

Have all but 5 tomatoes in their buckets now and am just waiting on more buckets to finish.

Amanda, I looked up the Italian Red Pear. It sounds good! Especially that it's not too sweet and has a thin skin. I can't stand thick, tough skins.
