My husband and I just missed being killed--I think-- by a falling tree. Actually, part of a huge sweetgum tree broke off and came down. It hit the southwest side of one of our vegetable gardens. About three minutes prior to that, we had been there and moved on to the daylily seedling bed. We were checking out the plants when we heard the big crack and saw the center section of the tree fall onto the veggie garden. Well, here are two lucky people giving thanks that we decided to look at the daylily seedlings just at the right time. If any of our seedlings turn out to be worth keeping, I think part of the name will include something to do with luck. Anyway, we have spent most of the afternoon and tomorrow will be the same--doing the clean up as fast as we can. It is not going to be easy and very time consuming.

You can see where the huge section broke off.

To the end, approximately ninety feet. If you look, you can see the white tips of our t-posts that is part of our electric fence. We were standing there and had just walked away a couple of minutes before the crash.

I forgot to add the good news that Dream Sequence daylily arrived today and is in the ground. Glad to have something good happen after such a close call.

Wow! That was indeed a very close call. Glad you missed what might have been a very serious injury or worse. Group hug

I have 2 large oak trees in my yard and it does worry me that one of the large branches might come down on me. I love large trees, but they can be dangerous.

I was out working in the garden and walking through the yard on tuesday of this week when it was terribly windy. Kept glancing up at all the tall trees whipping around, but I figured I wouldn't be any safer in the house!

So glad you are both ok. Your property is beautiful.
I are sooooo smart!

Amazing! I would suggest Close Call for a name, or Near Miss. I am glad you are ok, and still time to plant veggies.

:thankyou:, everybody, we certainly are happy we weren't injured or worse. We have been working hard to do clean up. Today we have been slowed by rain, but we have many days to take care of this, and yes, my husband will be doing a replant of the cantaloupe seeds that were flattened by the tree. The veggie plants at the very north end escaped any damage. When you have large trees on your property, you have to be mindful that this could happen any time. @ALilyFan, those are great names, and we hope we will have at least two keeper DL seedlings that will receive them. @Josieskid, my husband is the reason our property looks nice, he is a tireless worker.

Well, I posted twice, sorry. I forgot to include the notice to Josieskid on the first one, so ended up with two. I was going to delete it but I can't seem to do it.

I deleted it for you Avedon. What a scary situation, so glad you are ok. We recently had a twin trunk hemlock taken down that split at the base over winter. The tree was beside our driveway and I hate to think what could have happened had DH not noticed the split. Both our vehicles are parked where it would have landed.

Char, thank you for deleting the double message, and I am happy that you were able to have a damaged tree removed before it could come down on you or your cars.

So thankful that you and your husband had moved on to the seedling bed just at the right time. That is one massive tree and quite a bit of wood and work on the ground!

Thanks, Doris, we are working hard and most of the tree has been cut and a lot of it has burned. Tomorrow the biggest part of the trunk will be cut, don't know how long it will take. We use the tractor and a chain to help lift up the big heavy limbs so my husband can cut it into sections with the chain saw. Then we can haul it over to the burn pile with the tractor. Thank goodness, we have the equipment to deal with this, probably would cost quite a bit to have someone else do it. We'd rather spend that money on daylilies nodding nodding nodding
